A research grant (Master) is available for scientists who currently hold a master degree in Science or Engineering disciplines within the framework of FCT funded project “From inexpensive raw materials to new luminescent glass materials” (reference PTDC/QEQ-QIN/3007/2014), financed by national funds through FCT/MEC (PIDDAC) and, when applicable, co-financed by FEDER under the PT2020 Partnership Agreement, under the following conditions:

Admission requirements: We are looking for motivated candidates with a Master degree in the field of Chemistry, Physics, Material Science or related areas. Previous experience in solid-state NMR will be valued.




Activity Outline:


The main goal of the project is to develop new glass materials for down­converting UV light to visible/NIR light with luminescent quantum yields approaching unity. The team will optimize the synthesis of photoluminescent Si­Al­B multicomponent glass based on Pb quantum dots and photoluminescent zeolitic materials based on chalcogen clusters. The selected candidate will work on the physical characterization of the synthesized materials, mainly through the use of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR).

Solid­state NMR will be used to probe the local environment and coordination mode of a range of nuclei. For the characterization of the glass and zeolite materials, the main nuclei to be studied are 27Al, 11B, 23Na and 29Si.


The selected candidate is expected to acquire, analyze and compile all the experimental data relevant for the physical characterization of the different materials.


Legislation and regulations: The fellowship is in accordance with Law Nº. 40/2004, 18th August (Research Fellow Statute) and regulations for Advanced Training of Human Resources of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) I.P. — no. 234/2012, no. 326/2013 and no. 339/2015 (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt) and the Regulation of Scientific Research Grants from the University of Aveiro – Regulation n.º 341/2011, published in Diário da República, 2nd series, n.º 98, 20th Maio.


Workplace: The work will be carried out at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, University of Aveiro, under the scientific supervision of Professor João Rocha and Dra. Mariana Sardo.



Duration and scope of activity: The fellowship will have a duration of 6 months on an exclusivity basis and is expected to begin in July 2018.



Value of monthly maintenance allowance: 980 Euros/month (tax free) according to the official table for Research Grants from FCT (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The periodicity of the fellowship's payment is monthly and via bank transfer. The fellowship holder, if not covered by any social protection scheme can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, pursuant to "Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social"



Evaluation Criteria and Process: The evaluation criteria are: a) marks of the academic degrees held by the applicant and adequacy of the academic training (40%); b) Research experience in a field related to the work plan (40 to 60%); c) Possible interview of the 3 first candidates in case the Jury considers it necessary (0 to 20%). The final results of the evaluation will be posted, as an ordered list in a visible and public place of Complexo de Laboratórios Tecnológicos building and the selected candidate will be contacted by e-mail.


Juri: The Jury responsible for the evaluation process is composed by: Professor João Rocha (President), Dra. Marta Ferro, Dra. Mariana Sardo.
