Job:
Early Stage Researcher in the FOIE GRAS EU Training Network ESR 9

Job/Fellowship Reference: Early Stage Researcher in the FOIE GRAS EU Training Network ESR 9

Main research field: Biological sciences

Sub research field:

Job summary:

We are seeking to appoint an Early Stage Researcher (ESR, PhD fellow) within the FOIE GRAS European Training Network sponsored by the Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions EU Horizon 2020. ESR will participate in a research project on the mitochondrial biomarkers to predict hepatic surgery success at the Institute of Biomedical Research of Barcelona (IIBB-CSIC), Spain, commencing in September 2018. Funding is initially available for 27 months and ESR is expected to be enrolled in a PhD programme.

A key objective of the FOIE GRAS network is to better understand the metabolic mechanisms and treatment behind NAFLD. This project aims to use animal models of postoperative hepatic failure (PHF) to measure end-points of mitochondrial function (e.g. respiration, membrane potential, oxidative stress and mitochondrial gene expression) at different points after surgery in order to predict success or failure of the surgery process. Research will include methodologies and techniques in liver surgery in rodent models, miRNA/mtDNA and bacterial DNA screening, high throughput mitochondrial function analyses, as well as provide IR fingerprint in serum by IR-based methods. The post-holder will have some scope to adapt the project based on their interests.

The post-holder will complete a research project under the supervision of Dr. Juan Catafau at the Institute of Biomedical Research of Barcelona, Spain, with additional supervision of Dr. Hans Zischka at the German Research Center for Environmental Health (HMGU), Germany, and Dr. Carlos Palmeira and Dr. Paulo Oliveira at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), Portugal.

The post-holder will be a member of the ETN FOIE GRAS (GA No. 722619), which comprises 10 beneficiary institutions and 4 associated partners from industry and clinical practice in 7 countries.
