NOTICE OF THE OPENNING OF AN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR RECRUITMENT ONE POST-DOC RESEARCHER

 

António Fernando Sousa da Silva, Full Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Sciences of Oporto University, advertises the opening for 10 working days of an international competition for recruitment on ONE PhD researcher, within the Projeto de Investigação Científica e Desenvolvimento Tecnológico (IC&DT): 02/SAICT/2017, funded by FCT and Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER) through Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização, referência POCI-01-0145-FEDER-031302.

Admission requirements: Application can be submitted by any nationals, foreigners and stateless persons with a PhD degree in the above mentioned scientific area- Physical Science or physical engineering and demonstrated experience in the fabrication and characterization of nanostructured materials.

If the candidate holds a doctorate awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions established in the Decree-Law no. 341/2007. All the formalities established in the Decree-Law must be met by the deadline set to submit the application.

Other preferential requirements: publications that demonstrate experience in the fabrication and characterization of nanostructured materials as well as previous post-doc assignments in different countries are positively valued in the application.

 

Job description:

Little is known on the effects of dimensional confinement on intermetallic alloys such as Heusler, Heli-magnetic (Skyrmion like), magnetostrictive (MS) and magnetocaloric (MC) materials. It is expected that these kinds of nanostructured materials will be the origin of new physical phenomena in the nanomganetism research field.

Therefore, this proposal aims to develop and optimize the necessary tools and know-how to produce and study nanostructured materials such as R-Si-Ge compounds (with R = rare earth), that are one of the rare materials combining both large magnetostriction and magnetocaloric effects, and Heusler ternary compounds (Co2-Fe-Y with Y = Al, Ga, Sn, etc.), that present a rich variety of interesting physical properties like spin current polarizing, shape memory and the presence of magnetic skyrmions at room temperature:

- The materials growth will be carried out using the novel metallic-flux nanonucleation (MFNN) technique on pre-patterned alumina templates.

- Different physical characterization techniques will be used to probe the structure, morphology, magnetic, elastic and transport properties, aiming to identify the characteristic length scales below which the different phenomena are critically altered.

- Finally, the dynamical evolutions of these transitions, where there is still very little work performed, will be explored varying the studied frequency range since the MHz to THz regimen.

 

Legal Framework:

Decree-Law Nº, 57/2016 of 29th August, amended by Law no. 57/2017 of 19th July, establishing the Regulation of Scientific Employment (Regime Jurídico do Emprego Científico - RJEC); Regulatory Law no. 11-A/2017 of 29th December; the Labour Code in the current version of Law no. 7/2009 of 12th February.

 

Under the terms of Article 18 of RJEC, the present call for tenders is exempt from: i) authorization from the Government officials in charge of the areas of Finance and Public Administration, as specified in Paragraph 3 of Article 7 of the Public Service Labour Law (Lei de Trabalho em Funções Públicas – LTFP); ii) a prior favourable opinion from the Government officials in charge of the areas of Finance and Public Administration (as specified in Paragraph 5 of Article 30 of the LTFP); and iii) the legal procedure for the recruitment of workers in the process of requalification, as specified in Article 265 of the LTFP.

 

The place of work Department of Physics and Astronomy - Faculty of Sciences University of Porto, at IFIMUP-IN research unit, under scientific supervision of the responsible researchers of this project.

 

Duration of contract: The present work contract is due to start on November 2018 and will be maintained only for the period due to accomplish the tasks of the job description.

 

Remuneration: the monthly remuneration to be attributed is the one provided in article 2 of Regulatory Decree n. 11-A / 2017 of 29 December, corresponding to Level 33 of the Single Remuneration Table (2,128.34 Euros).

 

 

Methods of selection and definition of their weights/evolution criteria:

According to Article 5 of the RJEC, selection will be based on the evaluation of the candidate’s scientific and academic career.

 

The evaluation of the scientific and curricular path, taking into account the profile appropriate to the activity to be developed, focuses on relevance, quality and current impact of:

a) the scientific and technological production of the last five years considered to be more relevant by the applicant;

b) the applied or practice-based research activities developed over the last five years and considered as having the greatest impact by the candidate;

c) the activities of extension and dissemination of knowledge developed during the last five years, in particular in the context of culture and scientific practices promotion that are considered by the candidate to be of greater relevance;

d) the activities of management of science, technology and innovation programs, or the experience in observing and monitoring the scientific and technological system or higher education, in Portugal or abroad.

 

The period of five years referred to in the preceding paragraph may be increased by the jury, at the request of the candidate, when justified on grounds of suspension of scientific activity for socially protected reasons, namely on grounds of parental leave, prolonged serious illness, and other situations of unavailability for work legally protected.

 

Grading system:

 

The grading system will produce a result on a 0 to 100 scale, based on the basis of the following criteria and weights:

a)     Academic profile, including areas of previous work, where the experience in different areas up to present is positivelly valued (40%)

b)     Experience in the fabrication and characterization of nanostructured materials (30%)

c)     Short of long-term assignements in countries different from the one where the degree(s) were obtainned (10%)

d)     Participation in research projects (10%)

e)     Supervision of students (10%).

 

The Selection Committee shall deliberate by means of a nominal vote based on the selection criteria adopted and published, and abstentions are not allowed.

Minutes of the meetings of the jury are drawn up, containing a summary of what has taken place in the meetings, as well as the votes cast by each of the members and their reasons; these minutes should be available to candidates whenever requested.

After completing the application of the selection criteria, the jury will draw up an ordered list of successful candidates with their classification.

Depending on Selection Committee's appraisal, an interview can take place. In that case, the final candidate’s grade will have the following wights: 90% of the previous result, combined with 10% of the interview’s grade.

 

The final decision of the jury is approved by the maximum leader of the institution that also has to decide on the hiring.

Results notifications:

Lists of admitted and excluded candidates, as well as the final ranking lists, will be published and advertised on the webpage of this call at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, and all candidates will be notified by under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure.
