8. The selection is made through the evaluation of the scientific and curricular path of the candidates.

9. The selection of the PhD holder to be hired will be carried out through assessing the academic and curriculum vitae of the candidates. In general terms, this evaluation will concern relevance, quality and state of the art: a) of the scientific and technological production considered more relevant by the candidate; b) of his/her active role in R&D projects; c) of the activities regarding the extension and dissemination of knowledge carried out in the last five years, specifically in the context of promoting culture and scientific practices, considered of greatest importance by the candidates, related with the Position in the tender.

10. The tender has been opened for the Position described in the following paragraphs;
10.1. This position is designed to carry out a plan of research activities and dissemination of knowledge in the research line “Protozoan parasites: study of mechanisms of pathogenesis, molecular epidemiology and new treatment strategies” coordinated by Maria do Céu Sousa, PhD under the R&D project entitled "Giardia lamblia extracellular vesicles in modulation of host immune cells: potential application of Giardia EVs against intestinal inflammation", reference PTDC/SAU-PAR/31506/2017. Acute enteritis or diarrheal disease is the second leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for over 1 million deaths annually with higher mortality rates in developing countries. Giardia lamblia is a flagellated protozoan parasite that infects and colonizes small intestine causing waterborne diarrheal disease in a wide variety of mammalian species. The prevalence of giardiasis is 2 to 5% in developed countries and 20 to 30% in developing countries. It is the most common pathogenic parasitic infection in humans, with an estimated 280 million cases of symptomatic giardiasis annually worldwide. Giardiasis is characterized by a wide range of clinical manifestations, from asymptomatic to vomiting, abdominal pain, malabsorption, weight loss and severe diarrhea. Despite these clinical symptoms, G. lamblia infection in human is typically characterized by little or no mucosal inflammation. Several human studies suggest that Giardia infections may protect against the development of diarrheal disease and, potentially, the development of intestinal inflammatory responses. The mechanisms of this immune subversion are not fully disclosed but preliminary data from our lab indicates that extracellular (EVs) released by parasites may be carrying effector molecules that specifically inactivate key inflammatory mediators in host cells. We hypothesize therefore that Giardia EVs or some effector molecules that they carry may be used in the establishment of innovative therapies form the management of inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases which will be the ultimate goal of GiardiaProt@cleaver. To test this hypothesis, we will isolate EVs from Giardia trophozoites and characterize them through ultrastructural, proteomic and lipidomic analysis. Following, we will evaluate the immune-regulatory effects of Giardia EVs over macrophages and dendritic cells and finally we will address whether Giardia EVs modulate the inflammatory state in an in vitro and an in vivo model of inflammatory bowel disease. It is our strong believe that GiardiaProt@cleaver will reveal relevant information about the molecular mechanisms underlying the immune evasion of Giardia, supporting the development of future pharmacological agents that specifically target the parasite. Moreover, considering that G. lamblia is often found in association with a variety of pro-inflammatory gastrointestinal (GI) pathogens, the Giardia EVs could be applied to the development of a cell-free vaccine for prevention and treatment of severe diarrheal in endemic areas as well as for modulation of other inflammatory bowel diseases. Experience in parasitology, protozoan culture (cell lines and primary cell cultures of Giardia), cell culture, laboratory techniques of molecular biology, biochemistry and immunology, as well as knowledge in parasitic genetics will be valued.

11. The scientific and curricular career is target of evaluation criteria. The evaluation of the CV of the candidates, in particular the content of the scientific publication, the scientific merit and research capacity in the project area will be made according to the following criteria:
11.1 Integrated assessment of the curriculum trajectory of the candidate, based on an overview of his / her scientific and communication merits - 90% in total.
