Job summary:

COFAC, Cooperativa de Animação e Formação Cultural crl, hereby opens a competition to recruit a PhD researcher, corresponding to position 33 of the Single Remuneration Table, under the terms of the applicable legislation, with an Open-Ended Employment Contract, for the project entitled “Three dimensional motion analysis for monitoring of rehabilitation and high performance training of the equine athlete”, Reference PTDC/CVT-CVT/32613/2017, within the scope of the interaction between Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Equine Biomechanics, supported by national funding inscribed in the budget of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) – and carried out in the research unit CICANT - Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture and New Technologies.

Job description:

1 - Main Duties Validation of a 3D model of full body equines using the Vicon system. The participation of the PhD holder to be hired involves the command of the features of the hardware and the software programmes inherent to the use of the Vicon system, in particular the use of the Nexus/Vicon software and all the developments necessary for the 3D model to be created and explored so as to provide the necessary data to the remainder of the research team. The 3D model to be developed will be applied to the horses which will constitute the project’s sample. The kinematic data will be collected using last-generation Vicon cameras, in a capture volume suited to the motion of the horses which constitute the sample. For the same horse, data will be collected in different trials on different days. Data collection will take place at HidroVet (Janas). The system will be calibrated according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and a “static” trial will be conducted before the motion trials. A veterinarian doctor will apply the reflective markers on the horses, the coordinates of which will be captured by the Vicon camera mentioned above and which will form the basis for the development of the 3D graphic model. The criterion which defines the horses’ step is determined by a veterinarian doctor and will be associated with one of the coordinates of one of the reflective markers. The acquisition, processing and analysis of the kinematic data will be done using the Nexus software. After the three-dimensional reconstruction of the markers’ trajectory, each segment will be identified and the calculation of its linear and angular kinematic variables, associated with the 3D biomechanical model developed in the meantime, will be made. The construction of the 3D model will be based on a broad set of reflective markers, placed in reference places previously defined according to the proposed software solutions in agreement with the criteria defined from the medical-veterinarian perspective. Based on these markers, the segments of the 3D model representing the horse will be defined. For this, a specific software will be used (Body Builder, or similar). The software developed must allow the capture of different joint behaviours for each articulation based on 6 degrees of freedom of the segments representing the model. The calculation will allow researchers to obtain data on displacements and speeds, both linear and angular, of the different joints, namely data on flexion and extension on the sagittal plane, abduction and adduction on the frontal plane, and internal and external rotation in the transverse plane. These movements will be expressed as movements of the distal segment relative to the proximal segment. In this sense, the software developed by the PhD researcher to be hired must take this criterion of analysis into account. The data collected will be used to monitor the evolution of the locomotion of horses with orthopaedic injury and undergoing treatment from Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The treatment protocols used will thus be objectively analysed before and during the period, as well as when upon its completion. To this end, statistical tools suited to the goal of the project must be developed by the PhD researcher to be hired. In accordance to the project plan, the 3D model must be ready to be used within the first six months of contract. The position of PhD researcher is made effective by means of an open-ended employment contract, for a maximum period of 30 months, under the terms of Decree-Law nº 57/2016, of 9 August, amended by Law nº 57/2017, of 19 July, and the Portuguese Labour Code. 2. The tasks to be carried out in the fulfilment of this position are those considered in the scope of research project mentioned in the previous article. 3. The contract to be made is scheduled to begin on 02 January 2019, and finish on 30 June 2021 or with the completion of the research project, preserving the term regime established by the Labour Code. 4. The tasks comprehended in the object of the employment contract take place in the premises of CICANT ­ Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture and New Technologies of Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, located in Avenida do Campo Grande, 376, 1749-024 Lisboa and at HidroVet, located in Rua do Alecrim s/n Janas, 2710-295 Sintra, or in such places deemed necessary to implement the research plan. 5. The gross base monthly salary to be paid is 2128.34 Euros according to paragraph a) of n.º 1 of article 15 of Law nº 57/2017, of 19 July, and to the first remuneration position of the initial level as laid down in article 2 of the Regulatory Decree Nº 11-A/2017, of 29 December, corresponding to position 33 of the Single Remuneration Table, approved by Order Nº 1553-C/2008, of 31 December. II – Eligibility and Applications 3 - Position to be filled and terms of open competition 1. The competition aims to hire a PhD researcher, with an open-ended employment contract, within the scope of the project entitled “Three dimensional motion analysis for monitoring of rehabilitation and high performance training of the equine athlete”, Reference PTDC/CVT-CVT/32613/2017. 2. National, foreign or stateless PhD researchers may apply to the position. 3. Cumulatively, the candidate should have the following academic profile: a. PhD in Systems Engineering, or in Biomedical Engineering, or Computer Engineering or related scientific area, demonstrating working capacity suited for the activity to carry out integrated in a multidisciplinary team; b. Preferentially, he/she should have research experience, in the field of movement modelling through the advanced use of 3D reconstruction software, namely Nexus, Body Builder, MatLab or equivalent, as well as be available to develop the skills necessary and sufficient to achieve the objective and carry out the tasks to be developed in the context of the project mentioned in I.1 and II.1, according to the features of the hardware and software to be used in said project; c. Oral and written proficiency in Portuguese and English; d. Demonstrate the ability to write technical papers, scientific papers, abstracts for congresses, technical reports and other indicators inherent to the activity and necessary for disseminating the work done, as well as demonstrate the ability to effectively produce oral communications in congresses and scientific meetings. 4. Should the candidate hold a PhD awarded by a foreign higher education institution, the formalities required by Decree-Law nº 341/2007, of 12 October, must be complied with by the deadline for submission of applications. 4 - Deadline The deadline for submission of applications is the 20th workday after the present notice has been published, on 06 November 2018, ending on 04 December 2018. 5 - How to apply 1. Applicants to this competition will address their request to Investigator-in-Charge, by email, in a PDF format, to the following email address: cicant@ulusofona.pt, with the following in the subject line “Application to project PTDC/CVT-CVT/32613/2017” and attach the following documents: a) Cover letter (in Portuguese or English) mentioning the motivations which justified the application, including an observation on the applicant’s skills to carry out the tasks described in the workplan (see item 2) and in the tasks to be carried out (see item 2); b) Curriculum vitae referring the professional experience, accompanied by a list of the scientific publications produced; c) PhD certificate; d) Personal data and contact information with their respective email addresses – of at least two leading academics who can attest the curriculum submitted; e) Other documents considered relevant by the applicant and which, from their perspective, are pertinent to attest and assess their scientific and professional history. 2. Excluding the elements mentioned in paragraph e), failure to comply with any of the requirements listed in the previous number will determine the immediate rejection of the application. 3. False declarations given by the applicants will be punished according to the law. III – Jury 6 - Appointment In accordance with the provision of article 13 of Decree-Law nº 57/2016, of 29 August, the following were appointed members of the Jury: (i) Chairman – Professor Manuel José Damásio, Director of ILIND; (ii) Member – Professor Manuel Mário de Araújo Pequito, Investigator-in-Charge; (iii) Member – Professor João Abrantes, Co-Investigator-in-Charge. 7 - Competences 1. It is for the appointed jury to assess the applications. 2. Minutes shall be taken for each meeting of the jury, which will include the account of the issues discussed as well as the votes cast by each one of the members and the grounds for the decisions made. 8 - Selection method 1. The applications admitted to the competition will be assessed taking into account the quality, timeliness and relevance of the scientific curriculum (scientific output and research experience suited to the objectives of the project) as well as professional curriculum of the applicants, in addition to the level of adequacy to the proposed work plan. 2. In the first stage of the selection process, the jury will assess on a scale of 0 to 100 the set of elements listed below: a. The scientific career of the applicant, giving particular relevance to the scientific work done or published in areas relating to the work plan which is the object of the competition (up to 35% of the assessment of this stage); b. The professional experience of the applicant, with special emphasis on the activities carried out in areas relating to the work plan which is the object of the competition (up to 50% of the assessment of this stage); c. Cover letter in Portuguese or English (up to 15% of the assessment of this stage); d. Should it be deemed necessary, with a view to performing the assessment at this stage, the jury can ask the leading academics mentioned in article 4, nº 1, paragraph d) above for information on the applicant. 3. In the second phase of the competition, the jury will select to be interviewed a maximum of 5 applicants among those who in the first stage obtained the highest scores. In any circumstance, only scores higher than 60 in item 11.2 shall be considered. The jury will assess the interview on a scale of 0 to 100. 4. Each candidate’s final score will result from the arithmetic average of the results obtained in items 11.2 and 11.3. 5. In the event of a tie, the final decision will be the responsibility of the jury’s chairman. 6. After the selection stages have been concluded, the jury will draw up, within no more than 20 workdays, a minute which will include the final decision, a ranking of the admitted applicants with their respective final scores, as well as brief description of the recruitment process, assessment and selection. 9 - Prior hearing Once the jury’s final decision has been stated, as referred to in nº 5 of the previous article, the applicants will be notified so that, in the exercise of their right to prior hearing considered in the Code of Administrative Procedures, they can submit their statement on it, within 10 workdays of the date of publication. 10 - Homologation When the deadline for the exercise of right of prior hearing has expired, the jury’s final decision is certified by the Chairperson of the Executive Committee of COFAC, crl., which is also responsible for deciding on the hiring of the selected applicant. 11 - Dissemination of results The list of admitted and rejected applicants, as well as their respective final scores will be displayed in the premises of Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, at Avenida do Campo Grande, nº 376, in Lisbon and, moreover, they will be posted on the website www.ulusofona.pt; the applicants will be notified by email.
