Job description:
CETAPS (Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies) is the result of a merger between IEI (Institute for English Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Oporto) and CEAP (Centre for Anglo-Portuguese Studies, FCSH, Universidade Nova de Lisboa). Thus, it is composed of two different branches (Lisbon and Oporto). The Lisbon branch is a leading research unit in the field of Anglo-Portuguese Studies and currently hosts 6 Research Teams. The research activities are focused on innovative projects in the following areas: British Travellers in Portugal; The Reception of British Political Thought in Portugal; The Reception of British Drama in Translation; Pombal as seen by the British; E-Dictionary of Literary Terms (http://www.fcsh.unl.pt/edtl); Portrayals of the Peninsular War: from the Novel to the Screen. Multidisciplinary and translational research is strongly encouraged. The candidates should have broad expertise and be able to offer an active contribution towards the goals of the ongoing collaborative research projects. The post holders will be required to communicate effectively with Faculty. Motivation to participate in seminars and scientific publications is also required.
The selected researcher must accompany and cooperate in the project of British Travellers in Portugal, which is now entering a new stage, namely the exhaustive survey of 20th century travel accounts.
Up to now this work has been done mainly for the 18th and 19th centuries, for travellers who came to Portugal for particular circumstances, such as the 1755 earthquake, the Peninsular War and the Liberal campaigns in which Britain took a very important part and which many military men, as well as diplomats, described in their works.
As far as the 20th century is concerned, British travel accounts published between 1926 and 1945 have already been the object of an MA dissertation and several other partial studies. Therefore, the researchers’ work will be focused on the travel accounts published from 1961, the beginning of the Portuguese Colonial War, onwards. Each traveller will be a case study, based on the social and political context of the time when he was in Portugal.
