Job description:
AIM OF THE ACTIVITY
Development of research within the multi project activity of the Gabinete de Filosofia Medieval - Instituto de Filosofia (IF).
MAIN TASKS
The enrolled researchers must:
- take part in the medium-term research groups and projects currently being carried out at the Gabinete de Filosofia Medieval (GFM).
- carry out a personal project of research on Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern Philosophy in one, two or all of these 3 GFM's main research groups: "Aristotelica Portugalensia", and "Reason, Sciences and Nature in Medieval Philosophy", and "Heuristics and Sources for the Study of Medieval Philosophy".
- carry out research initiatives that explore the continuity, the breaks and the links between Medieval Philosophy, Modern Philosophy and Contemporary Philosophy;
- increase internationalization of home research, presenting papers in international conferences or to be published in international journals;
- organize seminars and conferences as well as actively participate in national and international events;
- work in close cooperation with IF researchers on Medieval Philosophy;
- enhance the unit’s links with research networks it already collaborates with and explore new opportunities of collaboration with other national and international similar institutions;
- collaborate in GFM's scientific editorial work (critical editions, translations, books, journal, web site);
- consolidate the existing scientific research capital, thus optimizing all the available resources (since none of the unit’s current researchers is 100% dedicated to research activities on Medieval Philosophy).
REQUIRED ACADEMIC AND INTERPERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS
3 years of post doctoral experience with relevant preparation in Philosophy and Medieval Philosophy or Medieval Studies (on the basis of the relevance of the CV the selection committee can consider applicants with shorter post doctoral experience). Relevant experience in this research area and proficient knowledge of Latin will be considered.
The post holders will be required to communicate effectively with researchers from different research fields and organize joint projects. Therefore, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, high proficiency in written and spoken English, and the ability to supervise and collaborate in a multidisciplinary team environment are essential skills.
REMUNERATION AND JOB CONDITIONS
3 year full time and exclusivity job contract (with possibility to extent the contract for 1 to 2 more years, in special conditions that must be verified at the end of the 3rd year).
Workplace: Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto - Instituto de Filosofia.
Job contract with the Faculdade de Letras, within the FCT program "Ciência 2008", under the Portuguese Code of Labour (Law number 99/2003 and Law Decree 124/99).
Remuneration: determined in accordance with the FCT's funding table (c. 2.500 euro gross/month).
The availability of placements and the signing of a contract with the selected candidates is dependent on approval from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).
CRITERIA AND SELECTION PROCESS
CV evaluation and interview of selected candidates, by an international selection committee.
The official contacts (e.g. notification of the results of the application, notification for interview, final results, etc.) with the candidates will be made officially by email using the address from which the submission has been received.
Candidates must check their email everyday from 1st October 2008 onwards until the notification of the Selection Committee's final decision.
The availability of placements and the signing of a contract with the selected candidates is dependent on approval from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).

The applicants must send by email to ifilosofia@letras.up.pt in pdf or word format (all attached documents must not exceed 2MB, or they may be refused by the server):
(1) a letter or text message of application, accompanied by
(2) a 3 year personal research project (see above Main tasks, nr. 2) – maximum of 4 pages;
(3) a detailed Curriculum vitae clearly stating research or academic experience and publications;
(4) at least 2 recommendation letters by referenced academics in the field;
(5) any other elements that the candidate thinks to be relevant (such as reports on previous positions, etc.).
