The Instituto de Meteorologia (IM), I.P., is seeking 1 highly motivated scientist to work in any of the following areas (broadly ordered by priority):
- Climate Modelling at the Global and Regional Scales;
- Ensemble methods for Limited Area Atmospheric Models;
- Modelling and applications on land-surface energy and water balance
The State Laboratory Instituto de Meteorologia (IM), I.P., is the Portuguese National Meteorological Service. Its main activities include weather and climate monitoring, weather forecasts and severe weather warnings, seismic monitoring. IM research activities in meteorology and climate include: Remote Sensing of the Environment, especially linked to land surface fluxes and properties; Regional Climate Change Scenarios; Atmospheric numerical modelling, inc. ensemble techniques; and Land Surface Processes. IM is currently expanding its activities to cover global and regional climate modelling, with the aim of contributing to the next round of IPCC Assessment Reports.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Earth Sciences, Meteorology, Climate Sciences or a similar field and be willing to conduct their research in one of the areas described above.
Candidates must be fluent in English, although some knowledge of Portuguese may be considered an advantage. Candidates are expected to conduct independent research, to obtain external competitive funding, and to demonstrate excellence or promise of excellence in research.

IM is a member of EC-EARTH, a consortium of European National Meteorological Services and Research Institutes to develop an atmosphere-ocean-land coupled climate model based on the ECMWF seasonal forecast model. IM is also a member of the ALADIN consortium and runs currently the ALADIN model daily in deterministic mode and in a 50-member ensemble. IM holds the climate and weather observation records for Portugal. IM is the leader institution of the landSAF consortium, co-funded by EUMETSAT, and participates in a number of national research projects, as well as EU FP projects and ESA funded projects
The selection criteria are scientific merit, professional experience and adequacy of the curriculum to the strategic priorities of IM.
