We are accepting applications for a grant (“Bolsa de Investigação“) for candidates with a Master Degree, for the Project “Pack2Life – High Performance Packaging”, Project IDT in consortium, project Nº33792, co-financed by the Portugal 2020 Program (PT 2020) under the Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Program (POCI) and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER),  , taking place at the C-MAST - Centre for Mechanical and Aerospace Sciences and Technology, Department of Electromechanical Engineering of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal, under the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Mechanical Engineering.

Admission Requirements: Master degree in Mechanical or Electromechanical Engineering. Knowledge in Heat and Mass Transfer, CFD simulation, Acquisition systems and measuring probes, as well as in monitoring/traceability systems are preferable factors.

Required Documents for Admission: Cover letter explaining the interest in the position, detailed Curriculum Vitae with transcripts. Copy of the relevant certificates. Applications that are incomplete or do not comply with the above instructions may not be evaluated.

Work plan: This grant comprises the development of innovative packaging solutions for fruit storage. The work plan includes the development of (1) numerical studies: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) parametric studies concerning structural, geometrical, thermal and mass behavior (including phase change materials) parameters for the optimized air flow and heat and mass transfer in fruit storage packaging; (2) Experimental studies: tests (laboratory and real test conditions along the product cold chain) for characterizing the storage conditions; definition of boundary conditions of CFD models it corresponding validation; development/incorporating new systems and mechanisms in packaging solutions for fruit life extension and monitoring/traceability of fruit quality parameters. The expected outcome of the research work requires at least 4 scientific publications (2 in international conference and 2 in peer review international journals) during the grant period.

Legislation and applicable regulations: Statute of the Scientific Research Grant approved by the Law 40/2004, August 18th, in its current wording, as well as the Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology IP (FCT) (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2018.pdf ).

Place of Work: The work will be developed at the premises of C-MAST-Centre for Mechanical and Aerospace Sciences and Technologies and Department of Electromechanical Engineering of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal, under the scientific guidance of Professor Pedro Dinho da Silva.

Duration of the grant: The grant has a maximum duration of 32 months. The grant is renewable every 6 months, for an equal period, with a favorable statement of the supervisor.

Amount of the monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the scholarship corresponds to 980 €, according to the table of values of the grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.pt).

The payment of the scholarship will be made monthly by bank transfer.

Voluntary social insurance is added to the value of the scholarship, if the candidate chooses to join it, as well as personal accident insurance.

Selection methods: The selection methods to be used will be composed by 2 evaluation phases, according to the following:

1st phase - Curricular evaluation

2nd phase – Interview, which can be done by video-conference.

The evaluation in the 1st phase includes the following criteria: Curriculum vitae/Academic evaluation (30%); Suitability of the candidates’ profile to the project based on the relevant work experience in the tasks described in the work plan (60%); Fluency in oral and written English (10%).

The 3 candidates that present the highest scores after the 1st phase will pass to the 2nd phase.

For the final evaluation, each of the evaluation phases have an assessment of 50%.

Composition of the Selection Jury: Professor Doutor Paulo Jorge dos Santos Pimentel de Oliveira (President of the Jury); Professor Doutor Pedro Nuno Dinho Pinto da Silva (supervisor) and Professor Doutor Pedro Miguel de Figueiredo Dinis Oliveira Gaspar (Effective members); Professor Doutor Luís Carlos Carvalho Pires (Substitute member).

Form of publication / notification of results: The results of the evaluation will be publicized through a list sorted by final grade obtained, posted in a visible and public place of the Department of Electromechanical Engineering of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal, and the accepted candidate will be notified by email.

Application deadline and applications: The call is open from 27th February 2019 to 12th March 2019. Applications must be formalized, by sending an email of application, with the subject “GRANT_Pack2Life_Msc2-b - Application”, accompanied by the following documents: Curriculum Vitae, copy of certificate of qualifications and scientific publications that you consider relevant.
