Job summary:
The Research Centre of Science and Technology in the Arts of the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP-CITAR), in Porto, Portugal, seeks two candidates with Ph.D. in one of following fields: Visual Arts, Electronic Arts and Multimedia, Design Studies, Interactive/Multimedia Design or in similar areas.
The candidate's should have at least three years experience, with relevant research practice in the research lines currently ongoing at CITAR. This call is open under the PhD Hiring Program for the National Science and Technology Centre sponsored by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation Programme CIENCIA2008.
The candidate's record should indicate outstanding intellectual quality and also demonstrate the ability to work in a team, sharing knowledge and responsibilities and assisting the development of projects that fit CITAR's research profile. The hired candidate will be expected to contribute with innovative approaches to the work and projects currently under development in CITAR, or in cooperation with other national and international research institutions. The ability to develop an interdisciplinary research approach in those areas is a quality that is highly valued.
The position in UCP-CITAR includes as main duties the conception, coordination and execution of R&D projects, coordination of scientific teams, scientific supervision of researchers at post-graduate level, production of scientific papers, and technology and science management, including proposal and negotiation of contracts.
Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years postdoctoral research experience. In exceptional cases, duly justified, FCT may consider accepting applicants with less than 3 years of post-doctoral experience.
The jury reserves the right not to fulfil the posts in the absence of qualified applications.
Selection does not necessarily imply admission and the actual/effective admission of pre-selected candidates is conditioned to the final decision of FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology) and of UCP-CITAR.

Job description:
CITAR is a research centre unit with about 80 researchers (21 PhDs researchers). CITAR is a research unit of Portuguese Catholic University located at the Regional Centre of Oporto. CITAR's mission is to foster scientific research, through art, science and technology. The centre hosts and promotes interdisciplinary studies by fostering work developed together by artists, scientists and engineers with different backgrounds, knowledge, and cultures to create art, audiovisual objects and technologies
The successful applicant is expected to create, coordinate, and participate in projects in this area of research in association with other European and non-European institutions. The candidates should be able to propose and coordinate R&D projects in the identified areas, thereby contributing to the development and strategic planning of CITAR in this area in the short- mid-term period and potentially leading to publications in high quality international peer reviewed journals. This includes the establishment of new partnerships and launching of new projects and contracts, namely within the European Seventh Research Framework Program.
Working plan
The work of the candidate will be carried out within the above mentioned framework, under the supervision of the Research Group coordinator, and shall include the following tasks:
- Create, propose, search for financing and carry out at least one research project during the contract;
- Participate in CITAR seminars, promoting regular group seminars and organizing advanced lecture series;
- Participate in the organization of national/international scientific events, such as workshops, summer schools, and conferences.
- Write at least four research papers in international peer reviewed journals, if possible in collaboration with other CITAR members.
- Identify and locate internationally relevant publications, conferences and seminars in the research field, and delineate devices for the dissemination of this information in order to facilitate the participation of researchers, making these devices available to the wider scientific community;
- Collaborate in the establishment of targeted research programs in networking frameworks, ongoing activities to promote public awareness of science, and specialized consultancy.
Profile of the candidates:
Doctoral researchers for more than three years in the fields of Visual Arts, Electronic Arts and Multimedia, Design Studies, Interactive/Multimedia Design in Portuguese or foreign universities. Preference will be given to those who:
- Clear research interests in some of the above mentioned fields;
- Serious experience in research;
- At least 3 years of experience and relevant scientific publications;
- Are capable and experienced in the coordination of collective scientific work;
- Demonstrate experience and competence in the organization of national and international scientific events;
- Demonstrate leadership in what concerns creating and coordinating projects and/or scientific institutions connected to national and international networks;
- Guarantee research teams leadership ability;
- Solid capacities in what concerns written and oral communication, namely in English;
- Willingness to learn Portuguese, if this is not his or her native language;
- Team working experience;
- Good connections within the international artistic community.
Conditions:
Salary in accordance with Level-195 of the Science Research Career, including paid vacations, Christmas bonus and all social taxes. The basic income is round per 43.000,00 Euros (gross annual income) in case of exclusive contract.
Duration and Beginning:
The contract maximum is of 5 years, in accordance with the rules of Ciência 2008 programme and the applicable Labour Laws. Renewing for a newer term will be possible.

Jury:
The selection shall take into account the merit of the candidate, considering the academic background, curricular profile, artistic experience, the learning abilities and the research experience of the applicants.
The jury may invite a number of candidates to interview. The jury also reserves the right not to fill these vacancies if none of the candidates meets the stipulated requirements. In exceptional cases and based on outstanding curriculum or other relevant factors CITAR may consider admitting and proposing to FCT applicants with less than 3 years of post-doctoral experience.
