Job description:

Announcement for a Research Grant

Ref.ª 595092

A research grant is available at the University of Coimbra on the  project MAG-GIC – Geomagnetically induced currents in Portugal mainland, with the following characteristics:

Number of grants: 1

Type of activity: Geomagnetic field (GMF) variations from external sources are classified as regular diurnal or occurring during periods of disturbances. The most significant regular variations are the quiet solar daily variation (Sq) and the disturbance daily variation (SD). These variations have well recognized daily cycles and need to be accounted for before the analysis of the disturbed field. The separation of the regular and disturbance variations will be done using the principal component analysis (PCA) applied to the data series of different time length, acquired during the epochs of different level of the solar and geomagnetic activities and using other selection criteria. The accepted student will be working with GMF series observed at Coimbra Geomagnetic Observatory; will obtain a first-hand experience in the statistical analysis of observational data and PCA and will become acquainted with some of the models for the ionosphere and magnetosphere.

Financial support: PTDC/CTA-GEO/31744/2017, Project funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through national funds (PIDDAC)

Applicant profile: Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Mathematics, Geophysics, Earth Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering or similar, with good knowledge in Programming (eg, R, Matlab, Python) and Data Analysis

Location: Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory of the University of Coimbra.

Duration: 12 months

Renewal: Possibly renewable

Scientific Orientation: Doctor Anna Morozova

Financial conditions: The amount of the grant is € 752,38 corresponding to the monthly compensation stipulated in the FCT table (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en), plus social security (Seguro Social Voluntário, first level contributions) and personal accidents insurance. The payment will be made by bank transfer. This amount will not be increased during the entire period of the grant duration.
