A call is now open for 1 Research Fellowship for 1 Master’s Degree holder with the reference MARE-ISPA/025/BI/2019 under the activities of MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, at ISPA– Instituto Universitário (reference UID/MAR/04292) funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).
Scientific Field: Marine Ecology and Conservation
Requirements for admission to the competition:
i) Master Degree in Marine Biology or equivalent area;
ii) Experience in ecological sample collection and relevant laboratorial procedures (see job description above);
iii) Knowledge of local coastal biodiversity (experience in species identification);
iv) Experience in video analysis of temperate fish with EventMeasure software or similar tools;
v) Excellent communication skills in English;
vi) Excellent analytical capabilities and experience in writing reports;
vii) Certification and adequate experience in diving (dive master or above), boat license (local skipper, with adequate experience), VHF-A operator certificate, driving license and availability to spend extended periods in the field and travelling both in Portugal and abroad.
vii) Immediate availability to start the grant.
The research fellow will be responsible for:
i) Operate as an effective team player at MARE-ISPA;
ii) Collaborate in research projects focusing on marine ecology and conservation, namely
participating in all phases of the research process: from collecting field data to analysing data, taking care of research equipment and tools, processing samples and writing scientific papers.
This fellowship is particularly intensive in field work, with many daily hours diving and sampling, and in laboratory work processing and analysing samples and videos. It will also involve intensive statistical data analysis. It may include travelling both in Portugal and abroad. The fellow will in particular be involved in the following tasks:
· Preparing all equipment needed to field work and collaborate on the logistical organization of field work;
· Performing diverse tasks in the field such as, but not exclusively, underwater visual census, ecological sampling techniques, placing and retrieving diverse equipment (e.g. light traps, artificial substrates, BRUVs, data loggers, plankton sampling devices), monitoring microplastics abundance;
. Video analysis of underwater census and BRUVs;
· Sorting, sampling and identifying marine fauna, including larval stages, and processing and analysing biological samples such as otolith readings, genetic analysis, taxonomic identification;
· Data statistical analysis and progress reporting including the participation in writing scientific papers.

Work Place: The place of work is located at ISPA – Instituto Universitário, Rua Jardim do Tabaco, 34, 1149-041 Lisboa, Portugal and/or other locations necessary for the execution of the planned activities, under the scientific supervision of Doctor Emanuel Gonçalves (Associate Professor).
Duration of Fellowship: The Fellowship will have a duration of 12 months, eventually renewable until the maximum eligible period, conditioned by the funding. The fellowship is expected to start in January 2020.
Monthly Remuneration: 989.70 €, in accordance to the applicable regulation, namely the Table of Monthly maintenance stipend set by FCT (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en). This amount will be paid each month through bank transfer. The fellows are also entitled to the applicable social security system and a personal accidents insurance.
Selection Method: Candidates will be ranked according to the following selection criteria, in a scale from 1 to 100:
i) Personal merit as assessed by their Curriculum Vitae (40%);
ii) Experience in Diving and Ecological Sampling (30%)
iii) Motivation Letter (30%).
If necessary, the top candidates (to a maximum of three) may be selected for a second phase, which consists of an interview. In this case, the ranking will be based on the components: personal merit (70%), interview (30%).
If none of the candidates presents the appropriate and/or necessary skills and competences required for the position and respective work plan, the jury has the right to not attribute the fellowship.

Results Communication: All candidates will be notified of the results via e-mail. Once notified, if they wish to, the candidates have ten working days to respond. After this deadline, the selected candidate has ten working days to accept, in written, the attributed fellowship. Otherwise, withdrawal or renouncement of the fellowship will be considered, unless a proper justification is presented.
In case the selected candidate withdraws or renounces from the fellowship, the jury can notify and attribute the fellowship to the candidate(s) in the subsequent position(s), if applicable, and according to the final ranking list.
Formalization of the application requirements: Applications must be formalized by sending the following mandatory documents: Detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV), copy of Master’s Degree Certificate and Motivation Letter.
