I - Admission Requirements

The successful candidate must enrol as a PhD student in the PhD Programme in Physics at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, Portugal.

The successful candidate must demonstrate eligibility according to the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions eligibility requirements as an Early-Stage Researcher (ESR). A master’s degree1 in Physics or related area as well as knowledge of modern research techniques in Soft Matter Physics is essential, while some expertise in active matter and Computational Physics is highly desirable.

Very exceptionally applicants may be accepted with a:

a) A Bachelor’s1 degree in Physics or related area as well as knowledge of modern research techniques in Soft Matter Physics or its legal equivalent/particularly relevant academic/scientific work experience if accepted in the PhD Programme mentioned above.

b) Candidates who have academic/scientific work experience in Physics or related area as well as knowledge of modern research techniques in Soft Matter Physics if accepted in the PhD Programme mentioned above.

Moreover, the applicant must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of his/her research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. The applicant can be of any nationality but should not have resided in Portugal for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference starting date.

FCiências.ID - Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, through its President of the Administration Board, hereby announces the opening of an international call for the recruitment of a Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher for a PhD student to be hosted at the Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics (http://www.cftc.fc.ul.pt), University of Lisbon, Portugal, within the scope of the project ActiveMatter: From Fundamental Science to Technological Applications with the reference GA 812780, to be funded by the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network within the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Union in the form of an employment contract under an uncertain term on an exclusive regime, according to the Portuguese Labour Code and complementary legislation.

II. Applicable Law

1.       Portuguese Labour Code, as approved by Law No. 93/2019, of September 4th, in its current version (CT);

 

III. Work Plan

The ActiveMatter Consortium aims at training a new generation of physicists and engineers with the scientific insight and managerial skills to harness active matter at mesoscopic and nanoscopic length-scales and to exploit it in high-impact applications (e.g. the design and fabrication of biomimetic materials, the targeted localization, pick-up and transport of nanoscopic cargoes, drug delivery, bioremediation and chemical sensing).  The ESR6 (position) aims at modeling and simulate the dynamics of active matter to identify and understand non-equilibrium patterns emerging in the presence of time-varying constraints.

IV. Composition of the Jury

V. Place of work

The work will be developed at the Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics (http://www.cftc.fc.ul.pt) under the scientific guidance of Dr. Nuno Araújo and Professor Margarida Telo da Gama. The successful candidate will also go on secondments (lasting 1 to 3 months) to other partners of the ActiveMatter Consortium.

VI. Contract Duration

Applications are invited for a full-time employment contract under an uncertain term expected to start on December 2019 (estimate date), and will last until the Work Plan referred to in section III is completed. It will have an expected duration of 36 months, including an initial experimental trial period of 30 days. The contract is fully funded by the H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action.

The successful candidate has to enrol in the PhD Programme in Physics at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, Portugal.  

VII. Monthly Allowance

The successful candidates will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for Early Stage Researchers. The exact (net) salary will be confirmed upon appointment and is dependent on local tax regulations and on the country correction factor (to allow for the difference in cost of living in different EU Member States). The salary includes a living allowance, a mobility allowance and a family allowance (if applicable). The guaranteed PhD funding is for 36 months. In addition to their individual scientific projects, all fellows will benefit from further continuing education, which includes internships and secondments, a variety of training modules as well as transferable skills courses and active participation in workshops and conferences.

VIII. Evaluation of applications

1.       Failure to comply with the Admission Requirements implies the non-admission of candidates in absolute merit.

2.       The final classification of candidates is given on a scale of 0 to 100%.

3.       Evaluation of the relative merit of candidates, will rely on the following criteria:

a)       Curriculum Vitae 60%;

b)       Motivation letter 20%

c)       Assessment of the references provided by the candidate 10%;

d)       Interview, if deemed necessary by the jury - 10%.

 

4.       The jury may decide to interview the three best ranked [in criteria a) to c) of paragraph 3)] candidates, for clarifications and improved explanations of curricular elements. Applicants not selected for interview will be ranked only in criteria a) to c) of paragraph 3.

5.       The jury shall deliberate by means of a roll-call vote based on the evaluation criteria.

6.       Minutes of the jury meetings are drawn up, summarizing all relevant elements considered by jury members, as well as their individual votes and justifications.

7.       After completion of the evaluation process, the jury will draw up a ranking of successful candidates with their classifications.

8.       The evaluation results will be published on the website of the FCiências.ID (http://www.fciencias-id.pt/ "Concursos" tab). The candidates will be individually notified of the evaluation results by e-mail sent to the address indicated in the "Personal Data" section of the submitted form.

9.       After the publication of results the candidates have 10 working days to present in prior hearing a request of additional justification about the evaluation.

 

10.    The communication between FCiências.ID and the candidates will be electronic and will comply with the following rules:

a)       FCiências.ID will send an email message acknowledging documents received to the email address used by the candidates.

b)       In case of absence of a confirmation receipt by FCiências.ID – showing the possibility of technical problems that should neither be the responsibility of the candidate nor FCiências.ID - the candidates should contact FCiências.ID to ensure delivery and proper receipt of the documents concerned.

 

IX. Compliance with public policies

X. Submission of Applications

3.       On the electronic platform, applicants will complete a mandatory section on Personal Data [name, address, date of birth, contact email, nationality and scientific identifiers] and upload files with the documents listed below:

                                 i.             Detailed curriculum vitae - mandatory;

                               ii.            A motivation letter clearly demonstrating that the candidate has an adequate profile for the position and fully complies with the Admission Requirements - mandatory;
