1. Scientific field: Biology
2. Requirements for admission to the competition:
- Degree in Biology, Marine Biology or Environmental Sciences;
- Experience in analysis of underwater noise;
- Knowledge on acoustics and the effects of underwater noise in marine organisms;
- Competences in the use of sound analysis software packages;
Preference will be given to candidates who have prior experience in underwater acoustics, bioacoustics, marine biology and field work at sea.
3. Work plan:
Produce a catalogue of existing underwater recordings and underwater noise measurements in the Portuguese marine waters; to characterize the type and distribution of noise-producing human activities; to compile information on the distribution of acoustically sensitive species; To participate in acoustic sampling, measurements and recordings at sea and lab analysis of the recordings; To collaborate in the scientific and dissemination tasks of the project and in the preparation of policy proposals.

5. Work place:
The place of work is located at the R&D Unit MARE- ISPA, at ISPA – Instituto Universitário, Rua Jardim do Tabaco, 34, 1149-041 Lisboa, Portugal and/or other locations necessary for the execution of the planned activities, under the scientific supervision of Professor Manuel Eduardo dos Santos.
6. Duration of fellowship:
The Fellowship will have a duration of 12 months, possibly renewable by periods not exceeding the eligible period of the project and conditioned by the project's budget. The fellowships are expected to start in February 2020.
7. Monthly remuneration:
989,70 €, in accordance to the applicable regulation, namely the Table of Monthly maintenance stipend set by FCT (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en). This amount will be paid each month through bank transfer. The fellows are also entitled to the applicable social security system and a personal accidents insurance.
8. Selection method:
1) Candidates will be ranked, on a 1st stage, according to the following selection criteria, each having the indicated weight and classified in a scale from 0 to 5:
i) Interest and experience in the field, as shown by the candidate’s CV and motivation letter (90%);
ii) scientific publications in the scientific field of this position.
If deemed necessary, the 3 candidates with the highest score on the 1st stage, will be interviewed. In this case, the final ranking will consider both the evaluation obtained on the 1st stage (80%) and the interview (20%).
The jury reserves the right to contact / interview candidates for any further clarifications and for tie-offs between candidates with similar scores. In the event that none of the candidates has a suitable profile for the indicated work plan, despite fulfilling all the requirements for admission, the jury reserves the right not to award the fellowship.
9. Jury composition:
Professor Doctor Manuel Eduardo dos Santos (president), Professor Doctor Joana Robalo (jury member), Professor Doctor Emanuel Gonçalves (jury member).
10. Results communication:
All candidates will be notified of the results via e-mail. Once notified, if they wish to, the candidates have ten working days to respond. After this deadline, the selected candidate has ten working days to accept, in written, the attributed fellowship. Otherwise, withdrawal or renouncement of the fellowship will be considered, unless a proper justification is presented.
In case the selected candidate renounces or withdraws from the fellowship, the jury can notify and attribute the fellowship to the candidate(s) in the subsequent position(s), if applicable, and according to the final ranking list.
11. Formalization of the application:
Applications must be formalized by sending the following mandatory documents: Detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV), copy of Master’s Degree Certificate and Motivation Letter.
