The New University of Lisbon in its organic unit Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT/UNL) opens a competition vacancy for the hiring, in the form of an uncertain fixed-term contract, of a PhD Assistant Researcher, for the exercise of research activities in the area of Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology, with skills associated with physicochemical processing and characterization of optoelectronic devices, namely high-efficient thin film solar cells, under the R&D Unit Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodelling and Nanofabrication (i3N), no. 50025, financed through national funds entered in the FCT budget and, when eligible, co-financed by Community funds.



Job description:

The New University of Lisbon in its organic unit Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT/UNL) opens a competition vacancy for the hiring, in the form of an uncertain fixed-term contract, of a PhD Assistant Researcher, for the exercise of research activities in the area of Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology, with skills associated with physicochemical processing and characterization of optoelectronic devices, namely high-efficient thin film solar cells, under the R&D Unit Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodelling and Nanofabrication (i3N), no. 50025, financed through national funds entered in the FCT budget and, when eligible, co-financed by Community funds.

1. Type of contract and applicable legislation

The hiring of the PhD Researcher will be carried out through an Uncertain Term Employment Contract, to be concluded in accordance with the Labor Code, approved by Law No. 7/2009 of February 12, in its current wording. The contract will last for the duration of the project, until 31/12/2023, with the possibility of renewal for another 12 months, until 31/12/2024, if there is an extension of the same. The contract is scheduled to start in October 2020 .

They also apply to the present contracting process, namely Decree-Law No. 57/2016 of July 19, amended by Law No. 57/2017 of August 29 (RJEC) and Regulatory Decree No. 11-A/2017 of December 29.

2. Main attributions and activities and exclusivity

The PhD researcher to be hired will be responsible for experimentally developing devices for energy applications, namely innovative thin film photovoltaic devices processed by solutions based on organic-inorganic hybrid materials (e.g. perovskite-based semiconductors), optimized with photonic structures. The new nanostructured materials will be manufactured through chemical processing, using wet-chemical coating techniques, in close collaboration with I3N researchers associated with the i3n Aveiro hub and with activity in the Energy area. In his current research activity, the researcher, in addition to having to characterize morphologically, structurally, electrically and optically films and devices, will also have to develop techniques of light capture management in the devices, supported by physical models, in order to optimize as much as possible the photovoltaic conversion efficiency.

The PhD Researcher to hire will devote full of his/her professional activity to FCT/UNL, on an exclusive basis.

3. Place of work

The PhD Researcher’s working place shall be at the premises of Departament of Material Sciences using clean room and electrical labs in CENIMAT located in Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (FCT-NOVA), and he/she shall travel, in Portugal or abroad, as required by his/her attributions or as necessary for his/her activity.

4. Monthly remuneration

The PhD Researcher shall earn a monthly remuneration in the gross amount of €2392,96 by reference to the 2nd grade of the salary scale, pursuant to number 2 of Article 15 of Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of 19 July, as amended by Law no. 57/2017 of 29 August, and Regulatory Decree no. 11-A / 2017, of December 29.

5. Admission Requirements

National, foreign and stateless candidates, holders of a PhD degree in Materials Engineering, Nanotechnologies, Chemical Engineering and Applied Physical and Physical Engineering, duly registered and/or recognized in Portugal and having the following specific requirements may be submitted to this competition:

a) Solid training in materials and chemical engineering, applied physics and semiconductor technology.

b) Scientific research activity associated with the area of energy and applications of materials in energy.

c) Experience in chemical processing at micro and nano-scales of materials, including the manufacture and testing of optoelectronic devices processed by solution.

d) Practical experience with material characterization tools.

e) Experience in electrical and optical characterization of photovoltaic devices.

f) Good communication skills both written and oral of English language for the execution of technical reports, in addition to knowing how to communicate in Portuguese.

6. Evaluation of the Applications and Composition of the Jury

Applications shall be subject to evaluation by a jury that shall follow the procedure established in articles 13 and 14 (by virtue of article 19) of Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of 19 July, as amended by Law no. 57/2017 of 29 August.

Pursuant to Article 13 of Decree-Law no. 57/2016 the jury is composed of the following members:

- Chairwoman: Elvira Maria Correia Fortunato, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, New University of Lisbon;

- Member: Rodrigo Ferrão de Paiva Martins, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, New University of Lisbon;

- Member: Joaquim Fernando Monteiro de Carvalho Pratas Leitão, University of Aveiro;

- Substitute Member: João Pedro Botelho Veiga, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, New University of Lisbon;

- Substitute Member: Florinda Mendes da Costa, University of Aveiro.

7. Selection criteria

The selection of the PhD Researcher to be hired will be carried out through the evaluation of his/her scientific and curricular path, pursuant to Dl No. 57/2016 of July 19, in the drafting of Law No. 57/2017 of August 29, the following being the selection criteria and the respective weighting:

a) Curriculum Evaluation (50%);

b) Letter of Motivation, framework in the scientific fields and competences (10%);

c) Quality of the Interview (40%).

The interview will be done only to the five candidates with best classification in the first two criteria.

8. Final Decision

The results of the evaluation are communicated via e-mail to the email address used by the applicant for submission of the application/ indicated in the application.
