This proposal intends to develop an inter-institutional Unit/Programme able to optimize the existing expertise on mitochondrion-related dysfunctions and to attract new senior researchers and/or post-Docs to improve the quality and the scope of research done in IBMC and IPATIMUP. The creation of such Unit/Programme will allow the optimization of the logistic and material conditions and the further development of the human resources.
Our long-term goal is to clarify the mechanisms by which mutations in genes (mitochondrial or nuclear) that encode mitochondrial proteins may contribute to human diseases (tumourigenesis and myoneuropathies). In order to achieve our goal we intend to produce in vivo and in vitro systems in which we can assess the functional role of genetic alterations in human diseases and programmed cell death.
The Researcher should be able to handle microrganisms (bacteria and fungi) and perform cloning, mutagenesis and transformation as well as other general molecular biology techniques. In addition, the Researcher is expected to perform functional studies, such as measurement of enzymatic activities, protein detection and immunoprecipitation, gene expression and general characterization of mutant phenotypes.
The successful candidate should be able to carry on this project in collaboration with the collaborative group at IPATIMUP and working on projects at the frontiers of basic and clinical research. It is also expected that the Researcher undertake the responsibility for the supervision of PhD students and other laboratory collaborators.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should hold a PhD, experience in molecular biology and at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience, a good publication record and, preferentially, experience of research with fungi.
Application
The closing date for applications is August 30th, 2007.
