Job summary:
An Associate Research Scientist position is available at Centre of Ophthalmology, IBILI- Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. degree and international experience, and are expected to develop research in in the area of polymeric biomaterials and its applications to Biological Systems.

Job description:
The Biomedical Institute for Research in Light and Image (IBILI) is a research department of the Faculty of Medicine – University of Coimbra and is an internationally recognized centre of excellence for research in health sciences. IBILI fosters an environment for research, education and training that promotes a multi-disciplinary approach to health sciences, crossing traditional boundaries between Medicine, Biology and Engineering. Integration between basic and clinical research is essential for the advance of modern health sciences and IBILI commits a major effort to support such integrated research programmes. At IBILI we believe that people are a vital component for the success of any major scientific endeavour. We intend to attract and retain talented staff and we are committed to provide to all our staff a rich and fruitful research and teaching environment.
We offer a 5-year research position and the opportunity to develop an independent research line, at an externally recognized centre of excellence with modern research facilities and a network of research groups with focus in Vision Sciences. Successful applicants should have a good publication record and professional experience in in the area of polymeric biomaterials, particularly as they apply to Biological Systems with special emphasis to the eye and vascular system. We also value expertise and interest in nanotechnology and hydrogels. The successful candidate is expected to contribute and strength the existing collaborative efforts between the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Coimbra and IBILI, in development of innovative therapies for age-related diseases and application to animal models of disease.
We expect a proactive attitude, the ability to establish and maintain local and international collaborations. Interest in activities of public awareness of science will also be valued.
Salary: Grade 195 of Scientific Research Career – Approx. €42,500/year
