Job description:
We will explore the potential of stem/progenitor cells in clinical applications, with the long-term aim to develop cellular therapies for nervous system regeneration/remyelination. As a strategy to promote repair, mouse models of either nervous system injury or demyelination will be used as cell recipients.
During the first 3 years, reagents and facilities to develop the above research plan will be provided. Following the initial 3 years of recruitment, the successful candidate is expected to develop his own projects in the context of the general objectives of this proposal, by applying to national and international research funds.
The post holder will join the Molecular Neurobiology group (www.ibmc.up.pt/molecularneurobiology/research) at the IBMC (www.ibmc.up.pt). The IBMC is a multidisciplinary research institution in 5 domains including Neurobiology, Human Genetics and Genetic Disorders, Infection and Immunology, Cell Adaptive Mechanisms and Structural/Molecular Biology. The IBMC harbors over 300 people, 30 research groups and over 100 graduate students. The Institute offers Core Facilities including Advanced Microscopy, Tissue Analysis, Protein Production, Cell Culture, Genotyping, Flow Cytometry and Animal Husbandry. Links have been developed with several enterprises, providing the needed incentives for technology transfer. At the international level, IBMC researchers secure funds in highly competitive domains, and have developed a growing number of successful collaborations. The Institute itself is a member of the UNESCO Molecular and Cell Biology Network.
