Job summary:

KMOWL is a multi-disciplinary research initiative focused on the topic of Knowledge Management in Organizations. Prospective candidates should have previous research experience with knowledge management and knowledge management systems and be familiar with the overall research challenges of this area. Candidates with a background on either organisational theory and design will ber preferred.


Job description:

The Knowledge Management in Organizations for Work Leveraging group at University of Minho (KMOWL) is part of the Algoritmi Research Centre and brings together researchers from multiple disciplines that work together towards the realisation of a vision of intelligent and creative organizations. We aim to develop theoretical, methodological, and technological tools to study and improve the organizational mind.
 
We use the human mind as an useful metaphor to develop the organizational mind concept. Our claim is that it is possible to establish a parallel between the organizational processes and phenomena and those found in the human mind. It is our expectation that the organizational mind constitutes an interesting and useful framework to assist the study of how collective experience is understood and memorized, highlighting the events and objects that organizations choose to pay attention to. It has also the potential to assist in understanding the language elements upon which the organizational experience is constructed and what processes enable organizations to reason about that experience. By constructing representations about itself and its environment, an organization, as a collective self, creates a sense of meaning about the world and its action in that same world. The organizational mind framework can be used to improve an organization’s capabilities for survival and also to guide its members’ search for their collective well-being.
Using the organizational mind framework, researchers and managers will be able to evaluate an organization’s mental capabilities of:
  • Intelligence – how its members use the available knowledge to plan and implement solutions to problems and environmental challenges, ensuring the organization’s survival and well-being;
  • Learning ability – how their members collectively accommodate new experience by changing the way they perceive, think and behave;
  • Creativity – the organizations’ capability to produce new ideas and new things to ensure a dynamic adaptation to the internal and environmental challenges and opportunities.
To consider the organizational mind framework presupposes to view an organization as a whole capable of coherent behaviour and of holding some sense of a collective self.
 
KMOWL comprises 8 PhD researchers from different scientific fields: information systems, management, and cognitive sciences. At the present moment several research projects are being carried out addressing issues of the “organizational mind”. In special we are studying how organizations develop and sustain collective self-representations and developing tools to diagnose representational impairments.
 
Profile of applicants
 
Applicants to the post-doctoral position in Organizational Information Systems should have a PhD in Technology and Information Systems or Organization Sciences.
Applicants should have a high academic profile in Information Systems, in special information systems for management, business intelligence, and knowledge management systems. They should have a good academic profile in organizational theory. Applicants should also be motivated to explore scientific contributions in Psychology, Sociology, and Cognitive Sciences. The typical research projects in the area also demand a combination of quantitative and qualitative research approaches and a combination of research methods.
 
The candidates must provide a complete CV (with photo), in English, a statement of purpose outlining their research goals, two reference letters, as well as any other materials that they like to be considered by the Selection Committee until May 7, 2008.
