Requirements for admission: A recognized doctorate degree in any field; fluency in written and spoken English; experience in scientific or historical research; proficiency in computer use. Applicants should reside in Portugal for the whole duration of the fellowship.

Two Special Regime Research Fellowships for Doctorates (BI-RE)

Two Special Regime Research Fellowships for doctorates are open at FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e o Desenvolvimento de Ciências, for the project “MEDEA-CHART: The Medieval and Early-Modern Nautical Chart: Birth, Evolu-tion and Use” (Grant Agreement ERC-STG-714033, financed by the European Union under Horizon 2020 Programme), under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area: History of Science and Technology, History of Cartography, History of Navigation.
2. Requirements for admission: A recognized doctorate degree in any field; fluency in written and spoken English; experience in scientific or historical research; proficiency in computer use. Applicants should reside in Portugal for the whole duration of the fellowship.
3. Factors of preference: Preference will be given to candidates with:
a) Postdoctoral experience in historical research, particularly in the fields of the History of Science, History of Car-tography and History of Navigation;
b) Proficiency in Portuguese;
c) Knowledge of Latin and Romanic languages;
d) Knowledge and experience in computer programming.
4. Work plan: The research work is to be developed under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Joaquim Alves Gaspar. The tasks assigned to the fellows include, in particular:
a) The research on medieval and early modern nautical charts and textual sources, according to the project’s synop-sis in the annex to the present call;
b) The participation in scientific meetings and other public events;
c) The preparation and submission of articles to international peer-reviewed journals;
d) To assist the PI in the scientific supervision of the doctoral students assigned to the project.

5. Legislation framework: Statute of the Scientific Research Fellowship, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, as amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, and as amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October and by Law No. 12/2013, of January 29, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July; And also by the FCT, I.P. 6. Place of work: The work will be developed in the premises of the Faculdade de Ciências - Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL), in Lisbon, Portugal. The fellowship holder may have to do research work in national and international libraries, archives, etc., as required.

7. Fellowship duration: The fellowships will begin in June 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter, and have an initial duration of six months. They may be renewed until the end of project MEDEA-CHART, which has a total duration of five years, in accordance with the provisions of the “Regulation of Research Fellowships from the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. “

8. Monthly allowance: The fellowships amount to a minimum monthly allowance of € 2.100,00 and may be in-creased up to a maximum of € 2.500,00. The fellowship holders will have a personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme, can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, pursuant to the “Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social”. The allowances will be paid monthly by bank transfer.

9. Selection method: The candidates will be assessed by a Selection Committee, on the basis of their curricula (40%), the fit between their personal profiles and the objectives of the MEDEA-CHART project (30%), and the quality of the suggested work plan (30%). The candidates with the best ratings will be interviewed. The interview consists in a presenta-tion by the candidate, focused on his/her track-record and suggested work plan, followed by debate and questions from the committee members. Detailed instructions will be provided to the candidates selected for the interview.

10. Selection Committee: Dr. Joaquim Alves Gaspar (President), Prof. Henrique Leitão (member), Prof. Antonio Sánchez (member), Prof. Ana Simões (substitute member) and Prof. Cláudia Castelo (substitute member).

11. Publication/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation will be made public by 8 May, 2017, in the form of an ordered list of final grades that will be posted at the entrance hall of FCiências.ID, located at the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, C1 bdg – 3rd floor, Campo Grande, 1749-016 Lisboa. The candidates will be notified of the results by e-mail.

12. Deadlines: This call for applications is open from 13 to 28 April, 2017.

13. Application: Applications should be sent via e-mail to medea-chart@ciuhct.org, and include the following docu-ments:
a) A Curriculum vitae, including an early achievement track-record and a list of published works (up to 2000 words);
b) A Letter of Motivation, including suggestions for a personal work plan, consistent with the objectives of MEDEA-CHART project, as described in the Annex of the present call. The document should indicate the candidate’s research pref-erence: medieval cartography or early-modern cartography (up to 2000 words);
c) Certificates of all academic degrees;
d) Letters of recommendation (up to two).
