Job description:
Applications are invited for a post-doctoral fellow to work in the area of Science and Textile Technology, within the research group of Chemistry of Functional Textile Materials of the Centre of Science and Textile Technology, University of the Minho, Portugal.
The research group knowledge on fibres, polymerization, colour and dye chemistry and processes optimization, have served as the basis for the development of new textile products and finishing processes.
Projects of the group have been centred on dye chemistry and adsorption (Synthesis of new catalysts for degradation of dyes in effluents, modification of the dyeing properties of textile materials), controlled delivery (liposomes, microcapsules), interactive textile materials (PCM-phase change materials) and more recently, active textiles (anti-bacterial).
The successful candidate will be involved in the development of multifunctional materials and their application to a diversity of fields from sportswear textiles to protection clothes and medical/healthcare textile applications.
The post-doc will be a member of a highly motivated team in a dynamic international department, which has been rated with excellent classification by independent evaluation panels. From this research group, several international patents on microcapsules and their application and fixation methods have been filed and a spin-off company focused on the development and application of functional materials has originated from projects developed by the “Chemistry of Functional Textile Materials” research group. The team is now involved in several project submissions in the area of nanotechnology (stain-release, fire-retardant, moisture transport) and medical textiles.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in an area relevant to the project(recent Ph.D. in textile or polymer chemistry required), experience in polymer/fibre modification applied to the development of Textile Smart Materials, good knowledge of organic chemistry and biochemistry, excellent written English skills, and a good publication record (> 10 publications in peer-reviewed journals). Clearly, the project will allow enhancing this knowledge and will thus provide the post-doc with good professional opportunities.
Interested individuals should apply with a letter detailing why they are interested in the project, and a CV including description of past research and work experiences, as well as a list of references.
Application deadline: 2nd of June, 2008.
