LASIGE opens one position for researchers in any of the following alternative profiles:
A) Ambient Computing: Adaptive and Complex Embedded Systems
Software, architecture and protocols animating the future embedded, inconspicuous, networked devices will not have the same characteristics as we are used to in classical Internet-based systems. But they cannot either be designed under the rigid assumptions and techniques prevailing in the embedded systems arena (hard real-time, static, closed and integrated systems). Instead they must be extremely adaptive and autonomous.
We expect the PhD to pursue research topics akin to embedded systems but whose roots are centred in, but not confined to, distributed systems theory and practice. We aim at understanding and tackling all these problems simultaneously, developing the adequate models and architectural solutions, and also defining and implementing middleware abstractions and services that take into account the several facets of this future Internet made of large-scale complex embedded systems.
B) Communication Centric and Dynamic Software Systems
Emergent paradigms, s.a. context-awareness, mobile computing and service-oriented computing, present new challenges that require novel methods to tackle the complexity of construction and evolution of software systems.
We expect the candidate to participate to the study of models, methods, protocols and middleware solutions that help to cope with the new sources of complexity and dynamics in software systems, namely by supporting the construction of software systems with the ability to adapt very quickly to new requirements, new design technologies, or changes in the execution environment.
Candidates must provide:
Curriculum vitae (name, address, degrees, work/research experience,
selected publications, research projects/grants, achievements, etc.)
Transcripts of grades and proofs of the capabilities stated by the candidate.
Letter of intent (up to one page) mentioning: up to two desired research areas from the list above, in order of preference, and the personal motivations for applying to the Univ. of Lisboa, and to those areas.
Two letters of reference, TO BE SENT BY REFEREES directly to the organisation contact (data in section 2), in plain ascii or pdf or paper, by fax/mail or email (Subject: PhD Jobs U. Lisbon).
Please refer to job reference in all application materials.
Application deadline: 30 September 2008
5-year position, base salary: 43k€ (annual)
Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years postdoctoral research experience. In exceptional cases, duly justified, FCT may consider accepting applicants with less than 3 years of post-doctoral experience.
The jury reserves the right not to fulfil the posts in the absence of qualified applications.
Please note: The funding for this call and the final appointment of these positions are dependent on the approval from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia of the pre-selected candidates proposed by the University of Lisbon.
