MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (UID/MAR/04292/2013) at ISPA – Instituto Universitário, is opening a position for a Research Fellowship (Bolsa de Investigação – BI Mestre), funded by the Portuguese National Science Foundation (FCT) and Ministry of Science, Techonology and Higher Education (MCTES) through the strategic project funding.
Marine Ecology and Conservation
The research fellow will be responsible to:
i) Operate as an effective team player at MARE-ISPA;
ii) Collaborate in research projects focusing on marine ecology and conservation, namely participating in all phases of the research process: from collecting field data to analysing data, taking care of research equipment and tools, processing samples and writing scientific papers.
This fellowship is particularly intensive in field work, with many daily hours diving and in laboratory work processing and analysing samples and statistical data analysis. It may include travelling both in Portugal and abroad. The fellow will in particular be involved in the following tasks:
· Preparing all equipment needed to field work and collaborate on the logistical organization of field work;
· Performing diverse tasks in the field such as, but not exclusively, underwater visual census, ecological sampling techniques, placing and retrieving diverse equipment (e.g. light traps, artificial substrates, data loggers, plankton sampling devices);
· Sorting, sampling and identifying marine fauna including larval stages and processing and analysing biological samples such as otolith readings, genetic analysis, taxonomic identification;
· Data statistical analysis and progress reporting including the participation in writing scientific papers.
i) Master Degree in Marine Biology or equivalent area;
ii) Experience in ecological sample collection and relevant laboratorial procedures;
iii) Excellent communication skills in English;
iv) Excellent analytical capabilities and experience in writing reports;
v) Certification and adequate experience in diving (preferentially rescue diver or above and/or scientific diving certification) and boat license (with adequate experience), driving license and availability to spend extended periods in the field and travelling both in Portugal and abroad.
vi) Immediate availability to start the grant;

The candidate will be working at ISPA – Instituto Universitário, under the scientific orientation of Doctor Emanuel Gonçalves (Associate Professor).
The appointment will be full-time and will have a duration of 5 months with the possibility for renewal, starting on August 2018.
Monthly internship for full-time position:
According to the regulations of the FCT Scientific Fellowships in Portugal (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores) the net monthly salary will be of €980,00, which will be paid by bank transfer. The fellow will be covered by a personal accident’s insurance and can contribute voluntarily to the national social security system, according to Dec-Lei n.º 40/89 from 1th February.
Candidates will be ranked based on their personal merit as assessed by their Curriculum Vitae (40%) and Motivation Letter (30%). From the candidates with an adequate profile, the top candidates (to a maximum of three) will be selected for a second phase, which consists of an interview (30%).
