Job description:
The Centre for Research on Optimization and Control – CEOC (http://ceoc.mat.ua.pt/) of the University of Aveiro, invites applications for 1 research positions in Algebraic Graph Theory or Combinatorial Optimization or Computer Science.
The contract for this position is for one year minimum extendable to five years, equivalent to the index 195 of the Portuguese State research positions, corresponding to 3 038x14 = 42 532 euros per year.
Successful applicants are expected to collaborate with the CEOC research team at the Department of Mathematics of University of Aveiro. Although there are no teaching duties associated with this position, he/she may be asked to participate in seminars and other activities supporting MSc and PhD students. The main CEOC activities are devoted to advanced training of postgraduate students, pure and applied research in optimization, combinatorics, computation and control theory and also in the development of real world projects.
The candidate will integrate the on-going research at CEOC and, according to the research topic, this appointment will be involved in some of the following directions of research:
1. Algebraic Graph Theory: graph spectra (study of combinatorial properties of graph eigenvalues obtained from adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian matrices); spectral upper and lower bounds for graph parameters and characterization of graphs for which the bounds are tight; algebraic techniques for combinatorial problems in graphs.
2. Combinatorial optimization: optimization in graphs; mixed integer programming (theory and applications); network design; large scale optimization.
3. Computer Science: algorithms and complexity; digital arithmetic; quantum computation; algebraic automata theory; computational geometry.
The candidate must have a PhD in mathematics with at least three years of experience in one of the above research topics. Furthermore, the candidates should be fluent in English.
Candidates must send a letter of application, a statement about your research experience in the topic for which you are applying, CV, and three letters of recommendation (by E-mail) to: Prof. Domingos Moreira Cardoso, Coordinator of CEOC, ceoc@mat.ua.pt
The University of Aveiro is a Portuguese modern university, located on the city coast of Aveiro, between Porto and Coimbra, surrounded by pleasant lagoons. The university is strongly committed to advanced technological atmosphere and it is connected with several hi-tech companies.
To ensure full consideration, applications should be received by September, the 30th, 2008.
