1. Job description

Call for Research Fellowship (Master’s degree) in Marine Biology – 1 position

Job/Fellowship Reference: BIODIVAMP/026/BI/2019

Job summary:

A call is now open for 1 Research Fellowship(s) for 1 Master’s Degree holder with the reference BIODIVAMP/026/BI/2019  under the project BiodivAMP – “Development of tools for monitoring and protection of biodiversity in marine protected areas along the portuguese coast”, with the reference FA_06_2017_045 , co-funded by Ministério do Mar and Fundo Azul.

Job description:

1. Scientific Field: Marine Ecology and Conservation

2. Mandatory requirements for admission to the competition are:

i) Master Degree in Marine Biology or equivalent area;
ii) Excellent communication skills in English;
iii) Excellent analytical capabilities (e.g. R software, mapping tools, Environmental status assessment), and experience in writing reports;
iv) Certification and adequate experience in diving (level Advanced or higher);
v) Availability to spend extended periods in the field and travelling both in Portugal and abroad.

It will also be valued previous experience with methodologies to monitor fish communities, knowledge on Portuguese coastal biodiversity (Portugal mainland, Azores and Madeira archipelagos), knowledge on governance,legislation and experience working on Marine Protected areas, as well as local skipper boat license.

3. Work Plan:

The work plan will include both field and office work. The research fellow will be responsible for:

i) Operate as an effective team player at MARE-ISPA;
ii) Collaborate in research projects focusing on marine ecology and conservation, namely
to monitor marine protected areas.
iii) Participate on field work (prepare all the equipment needed to field work and collaborate on the logistical organization, collect sea water diving at different depths and filter samples to extract environmental DNA).
iv) Collect data regarding Portuguese marine protected areas, perform intensive statistical data analysis, and write scientific papers and reports;
v) Participate on the elaboration of the “Good practices manual for monitoring MPA’s in Portugal” in collaboration with external advisors.

4. Applicable Legislation:

Law nr. 40/2004, of August 18th, altered by the Decree-Law nr. 202/2012, of August 27th, and the ruling “Regulamento de  Bolsas de Investigação Científica do ISPA – Instituto Universitário” (http://www.ispa.pt/ficheiros/documentos/rg102_bols_invest_cient.pdf).

5. Work Place:

The work will be carried out at the MARE-ISPA R&D Unit,  at ISPA-Instituto Universitário, Rua Jardim do Tabaco, 34. 1149-041 Lisboa, Portugal and/or other locations necessary for the execution of the planned activities, under the scientific supervision of Doctor Gonçalo Silva (Researcher) and Professor Emanuel Gonçalves(Associate Professor and research group leader).

6. Duration of Fellowship:

The fellowship will have a duration of 12 months, eventually renewable by periods not exceeding the eligible period of the project, and depending on the availability of funds to pursue the development of the above-mentioned Project. The fellowship is expected to start in January 2020.

7. Monthly Remuneration:

989,70 €, in accordance to the applicable regulation, namely the Table of Monthly maintenance stipend set by FCT (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en). This amount will be paid each month through bank transfer. The fellows are also entitled to the applicable social security system and a personal accidents insurance.

8. Selection Method: Candidates will be ranked according to their curricular merit evaluated according to the following selection criteria, in a scale from 0 to 100:

i)    Personal merit as assessed by their Curriculum Vitae (35%);
ii)    Experience with analytical and statistical tools (20%)
iii)    Experience in diving and ecological sampling (20%)
iv)    Motivation Letter (25%).

If necessary, the top candidates (to a maximum of three) may be selected for a second phase, which consists of an interview. In this case, the ranking will be based on the components: curricular merit (70%), interview (30%). The jury reserves the right to contact / interview candidates for any further clarifications and for tie-offs between candidates with similar scores. In the event that none of the candidates has a suitable profile for the indicated work plan, despite fulfilling all the requirements for admission, the jury reserves the right not to award the fellowship.

9. Jury Composition:

Doctor Gonçalo Silva (Researcher at ISPA - president), Doctor Ana Faria (Researcher at ISPA – jury member), Doctor Frederico Almada (Researcher at ISPA – jury member), Doctor Emanuel Gonçalves (Associate Professor at ISPA – alternative jury member) and Doctor Miguel Soares (Researcher at ISPA – alternative jury member).

10. Results Communication:

All candidates will be notified of the results via e-mail. Once notified, if they wish to, the candidates have ten working days to respond. After this deadline, the selected candidate has ten working days to accept, in written, the attributed fellowship, or else, it will be regarded as withdrawal or renouncement of the fellowship.
In case the selected candidate renounces or withdraws from the fellowship, the jury can notify and attribute the fellowship to the candidate(s) in the subsequent position(s), if applicable, and according to the final ranking list.

11. Formalization of the application:

Applications must be formalized by sending the following mandatory documents: Detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV), copy of Master’s Degree Certificate and Motivation Letter that should mention previous experience on mandatory and facultative requirements. The call is open from the 18th of November of 2019 till the 4th of December of 2019. The non-compliance with these requirements may determine the immediate rejection of the application.
