1. Scientific Field:
Ocean literacy and conservation
2. Mandatory requirements for admission to the competition are:
i) Bachelor's Degree in Biology or equivalent area;
ii) Excellent communication skills in Portuguese and English;
iii) Certified experience teaching ocean literacy and/or conservation programs directed to children in reference institutions for these areas;
iv) Certification and adequate experience in diving;
v) Driver's license and availability to spend extended periods in the field and travelling both in Portugal and abroad.
It will also be valued previous experience with methodologies to monitor rocky intertidal communities, knowledge on Portuguese coastal biodiversity (Portugal mainland, Azores and Madeira archipelagos), knowledge in behavioural ecology of intertidal organisms, experience working on Marine Protected Areas and experience in writing reports.
3. Work Plan:
The work plan will include both field and office work. The research fellows will be responsible for:
i) Operate as an effective team player at MARE-ISPA;
ii) Participate on field work in different regions (prepare all the equipment collaborating on the logistical organization, lead groups of children and teach marine rocky shores ecology and behaviour of intertidal organisms in a field survey);
iii) Prepare and analyze inquiries, manage the project's webpage, social networks and other information dissemination channels;
iv) Statistical analysis of data, write reports and scientific papers;
v) Participate on the elaboration of the “Manual Kids Dive: mergulhar com crianças, descobrir o Oceano” in collaboration with all partner institutions;
vi) Collaborate in other research projects focusing on marine ecology and conservation, namely
surveys in marine protected areas.
4. Applicable Legislation:
Law nr. 40/2004, of August 18th, altered by the Decree-Law nr. 202/2012, of August 27th, and ruling “Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação Científica do ISPA – Instituto Universitário” (http://www.ispa.pt/ficheiros/documentos/rg102_bols_invest_cient.pdf).
5. Work Place:
The work will be carried out at the MARE-ISPA R&D Unit, at ISPA-Instituto Universitário, Rua Jardim do Tabaco, 34. 1149-041 Lisboa, Portugal and/or other locations necessary for the execution of the planned activities, under the scientific supervision of Doctor Frederico Almada (Researcher).
6. Duration of Fellowship:
The fellowships will have a duration of 6 months, eventually renewable for periods of 6 months, not exceeding the eligible period of the project, and depending on the availability of funds to pursue the development of the above-mentioned Project. The fellowship is expected to start in January 2020.
7. Monthly Remuneration:
388,81 €, in accordance to the applicable regulation, namely the Table of Monthly maintenance stipend set by FCT (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en). This amount will be paid each month through bank transfer. The fellows are also entitled to the applicable social security system and a personal accidents insurance.
8. Selection Method:
Candidates will be ranked according to their curricular merit which will be evaluated according to the following selection criteria, in a scale from 0 to 100:
- Personal merit as assessed by their Curriculum Vitae (35%);
- Experience teaching ocean literacy and conservation programs (25%)
- Experience in diving (15%)
- Motivation Letter (25%).
If necessary, the top candidates (to a maximum of three) may be selected for a second phase, which consists of an interview. In this case, the ranking will be based on the components: curricular merit (70%), interview (30%). The jury reserves the right to contact / interview candidates for any further clarifications and for tie-offs between candidates with similar scores. In the event that none of the candidates has a suitable profile for the indicated work plan, despite fulfilling all the requirements for admission, the jury reserves the right not to award the fellowship.
9. Jury Composition:
Doctor Frederico Almada (Researcher at ISPA - president), Doctor Joana I. Robalo (Assistant Professor at ISPA – jury member), Sara Francisco (Researcher at ISPA – jury member), Doctor Carla Santos (Researcher at ISPA – alternative jury member), Doctor Gonçalo Silva (Researcher at ISPA – alternative jury member).
10. Results Communication:
All candidates will be notified of the results via e-mail. Once notified, if they wish to, the candidates have ten working days to respond. After this deadline, the selected candidate has ten working days to accept, in written, the attributed fellowship, or else, it may be regarded as withdrawal or renouncement of the fellowship.
In case the selected candidate renounces or withdraws from the fellowship, the jury can notify and attribute the fellowship to the candidate(s) in the subsequent position(s), if applicable, and according to the final ranking list.
11. Formalization of the application:
Applications must be formalized by sending the following mandatory documents: Detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV), copy of Bachelor’s Degree Certificate and Motivation Letter that should mention previous experience on mandatory and facultative requirements.

The call is open from the 20th of November to the 4th of December of 2019. The non-compliance with these requirements may determine the immediate rejection of the application.
