Job description:

PUBLIC NOTIFICATION/0040/2020
ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE OPENING OF AN INTERNATIONAL SELECTION TENDER PROCEDURE FOR DOCTORATE HIRING
PURSUANT TO DECREE-LAW NO. 57/ 2016 OF 29 AUGUST

Internal Reference: CUBE-PhD-30345-2

1. Framework
The Rector of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Prof. Dr. Isabel Capeloa Gil, hereby announces an international selection tender for one vacancy of doctorate auxiliary researcher to perform duties of scientific research, on an exclusivity basis, in the scientific field of Marketing. The research activities are to be carried out at CUBE - Católica Lisbon Research Unit in Business and Economics - GES/00407 integrated at Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in Lisbon, within the framework of the Project PTDC/EGE-OGE/30345/2017 entitled “WELL-BEING & SUSTAINABILITY”, a project financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. ( FCT,IP) through national funds.
This project started on October 1st, 2018, it was initially predicted to last 30 months, and it is now expected that it will be extended for another year, until March 31st, 2022. The contract resulting from this selection tender should start between December 1st, 2020 and February 1st, 2021, with an expected duration of 11 months (duration of the activities) which will never, under any circumstances, exceed the duration of the project.
The aim of this project is to analyze the impact of socially responsible strategies undertaken by companies on consumers’ preferences towards their products, and on the potential spillover effect on consumers’ adoption of similar sustainable and social responsible behaviors. Despite all this apparent strong commitment by both retailers and manufacturing organizations on the development of socially responsible and sustainable practices, little is known  regarding the extent to which the adoption of these strategies generates a (positive) impact on the likelihood of consumers choosing products which result from practices of a similar nature. Additionally, little is known regarding the extent to which the embracing of sustainable measures by companies actually contributes to the adoption of similar practices by consumers (e.g., if a manufacturer or retailer develops a campaign to stimulate in-store recycling behaviors, does that increase consumers’ overall recycling practices?).
The current project aims to contribute to this body of literature by highlighting effects of socially responsible and sustainable strategies at the level of consumers’ attitudes and perceptions towards the products (project 1), along with the identification of corporate socially responsible behaviors that generate a greater spillover effect regarding the consumers’ embracement of sustainable behaviors (project 2).
The successful candidate will work on a research program that is designed to advance our understanding of the ways in which corporate social responsibility practices have an impact on consumers´ options for ethical products as well as on consumer’s adoption of socially responsible behaviors. A better understanding of these phenomena will allow public authorities, regulators, and companies in general to better understand which social causes to support in order to enhance consumers’ adoption of socially sustainable behaviors.
The researcher will be responsible for performing multiple tasks that include, among others, data collection and processing, literature review and collaboration in writing and preparing academic papers for submission at peer-reviewed international conferences and academic journals. The candidate is, thus, required to be able to develop rigorous work both in qualitative and quantitative analysis of datasets. The researcher will work under the supervision of Professor Dr. Rita Coelho do Vale and Professor Dr. Pedro Verga Matos, respectively Associate Professor at CATÓLICA-LISBON, Universidade Católica Portuguesa and Associate Professor at ISEG, Universidade de Lisboa.
We aim to hire a doctorate auxiliary researcher with academic training in the area of consumer behavior, particularly in the field of marketing or psychology, who can help the research team accomplish all the established goals of the project. The researcher will work on the premises of the Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics, collaborating with faculty in developing research on the topics of sustainability, retailing, consumer behavior, and corporate social responsibility, in the context of the WELL-BEING & SUSTAINABILITY project. This position is ideal for a doctorate, who has some international peer-reviewed publication experience, who wishes to pursue an academic career and wants to gain experience, as well as develop his/her academic publication record. Candidates who have consolidated experience in the development of experimental studies, particularly in their design, data collection and processing, will be valued. During the period of the contract, the researcher is expected to be exclusively dedicated to the project, with no engagement in any other type of academic activities (e.g. teaching and students’ supervision), unless specifically approved by the coordination team. The candidate is expected to work full-time (40 hours a week) at the school premises, being available to meet regularly with the project coordinators.

2. Applicable Legislation
Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of 29 August, amended by Law no. 57/2017 of 19 July, which approved the doctorate hiring regime destined to stimulate scientific and technological employment for all knowledge areas (RJEC), without prejudice to the specific regulations applicable to the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
