An international call for one postdoctoral research fellowship with the reference DAI/2021/05 under project - AARG-19-618007, entitled “Understanding the Impact of a Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease Mutation in CD2AP on Synapses", with the financial support of the Alzheimer’s Association, in the laboratory of Neuronal trafficking in aging under the supervision and mentoring of Cláudia Guimas Almeida at the Center of Chronic Diseases Research – CEDOC of the NOVA Medical School | Universidade NOVA de Lisboa of Lisbon. This postdoctoral fellowship aims for a recent PhD in neurosciences.

Job description:

 

Doctorate in Neurosciences or equivalent (PhD defended   in the last 3 months or to be defended until end of April).

Failure to meet these requirements is sufficient to exclude candidates.

Work plan:

 

The Postdoctoral Researcher will participate in developing a novel cellular model of late-onset Alzheimeir’s disease using human neurons differentiated from hIPSCs edited with CrisPR-CAS9 with the patient’s mutations, to evaluate how Alzheimer’s late-onset mutations disrupt neuronal function. The preferred language of communication will be English.

This project will include a broad and evolving range of tasks, including:

- Advanced cell culture technology

-- quantitative single cell microscopy

- Synapse and endosomal trafficking techniques

- writing and publishing under guidance

- Developing academic independence

- Dissemination and communication of results

The fellowship is awarded under Law 40/2004, of 18 August (Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow) and the Fellowships and Research Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology in force.

Place of work:

 

The work will be developed at the Laboratory “Neuronal Trafficking in Aging” at the Center for the Study of Chronic Diseases at NOVA Medical School | Faculty of Medical Sciences at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, under the scientific guidance of Dr. Cláudia Almeida (PI).

 

Fellowship duration

The scholarship will run for 6 months, starting on April 1, 2021.

The scholarship contract is eventually renewed for an equal period until the end of the project (3 years).

 

Monthly maintenance allowance amount:

The amount of the fellowship corresponds to € 1,616.00 monthly (tax-free), paid monthly by bank transfer, according to the table of values of fellowships directly attributed by FCT, I.P. in the country.

 

Selection methods:

The selection methods to be used are as follows:

 

Candidates will be screened for eligibility according to admission requirements listed. The evaluation will consist of 3 stages:

 

1.       Candidates will be scored and shortlisted according to the required application materials (motivation letter and CV). The value is calculated by weighing in each factor as follows scientific and curricular background (40%), expertise in the work field (40%), and motivation letter (20%).

Desirable skills and experience that will also be considered (please indicate in the CV):

hIPSCs cell culture

Human neurons differentiation from hiPSCs

Neuronal activity techniques (i.e Calcium imaging, electrophisiology, Multi-Electrode arrays, Phluorins, FM1-43).

Imaging techniques (i.e confocal, super-resolution, live imaging)

Quantitative image analysis (i.e. Fiji, Imaris)

Programming skills (i.e. Matlab, Python)

 

2.       Candidates with the best score in 1. will be contacted for a short-written assignment.

 

3.       The candidates that obtain the highest scores in 2. will be interviewed (remotely), and referees will be contacted. Candidates who are interviewed will be assigned a new classification.The top candidate will be selected based on the presentation (40%), previous work (30%) and questions (30%).

Publication / notification of results:

The final results of the evaluation will be sent by email to candidates who submit a valid application.

The competition is open from February 23 to March 8, 2021.
