Professor JORGE MANUEL MOREIRA GONÇALVES, Full Professor of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Vice-Rector of the University:
Following my Order dated 26 of August 2013, and exercising the powers delegated by Order published in the Official Gazette, 2nd Series, no. 203, of 19 October 2010, we are currently inviting applications based on qualifications for the position of one Associate Professor in the Disciplinary Area of Physics, Physical Engineering and Astronomy of the Faculty of Sciences of this University. The application procedure will remain in force for a period of fifty business days as from the date immediately following the publication of this Notice in the Official Gazette.
1. The applicable legal provisions are as follows:
Articles 37 to 51 and 62-A, of the University Teaching Career Statute, published in Decree-Law 205/2009, of 31 August, and amended by Law 8/2010, of 13 May; Regulation on Competition for the Recruitment of Full, Associate and Assistant Professor of the University of Porto – Order 12913/2010, published in the Official Gazette, no. 154, of 10 August 2010.
2. Eligible candidates:
Holders of a PhD degree for more than five years. If the PhD degree has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognized by a higher education institution in Portugal under Article 4 of Decree-Law no. 341/2007, published in the Official Gazette, 1st series, no. 197, of 12 October 2007.
3. The application process requires:
3.1 Application letter in which applicants are expected to provide the following information:
a) Full name;
b) Parents’ names;
c) Number and date of identity card and issuing service;
d) Date and place of birth;
e) Marital status;
f) Profession;
g) Home address or contact address;
h) Telephone or mobile phone number
i) E-mail address.
3.2 Documents attesting compliance with the terms laid out in no.1 of the previous paragraph, in particular the PhD certificate, except for the cases corresponding to the attainment of a PhD degree title in the University of Porto;
3.3 Copies, in duplicate and in digital format (CD or DVD), of the following documents:
a) Curriculum vitae with the relevant information for the assessment of the application, bearing in mind the selection and seriation criteria laid down in chapter 6 of this notice;
b) Works mentioned in the curriculum vitae submitted, in which applicants may highlight ten works that best represent the activity carried out.

5. The Rectory will inform the applicants whether the application has been admitted or not, based on the applicants’ compliance, or failure to comply with the provisions laid out in chapter 2 of this Public Notice.
6. Selection and seriation criteria of applicants
In the recruitment process of Associate Professors, the selection and ranking criteria of candidates are the scientific merit, the teaching quality and the participation in other activities that are relevant to the mission of the University of Porto.
A. In the assessment of the scientific merit of the candidates the following parameters will be considered (classification between 0 and 12):
I. Scientific leadership (classification between 0 and 5). This indicator rates the capacity of scientific autonomy of the candidate proven by the creation of an autonomous scientific project, beyond the mere follow up of the doctorate program or pos-doctorate orientations, by evaluating:
i. International signs of recognition of scientific leadership, shown, for instance, by invitations to prestigious conferences, to editorial boards of scientific journals or to positions in assessment committees.
ii. Coordination of research projects with external funding provided after screening process, taking into account the amount of the financing, the research team composition, the evaluation reports and the results, in scientific terms, in materialized prototypes and in terms of impact in the involving community, through the development of practical applications and/ or transference of technology.
iii. Supervision of students in master’s or doctorate programs, with published results recognized by the scientific community.
iv. Publication of scientific papers, namely those where the candidate is noticeably the main author, being the candidate’s job to pinpoint those he deems more relevant and make explicit his participation in cases of joint authorship.
v. Works of great merit with a strong scientific component or technologically innovative.
II. Other indicators of the quality of scientific performance (classification between 0 and 7). The following items are to be considered:
i. The scientific production of the candidate in books or in indexed scientific publications (Thomson Scientific or Scopus), measuring its number, the journal’s impact and citations in publications by other authors, pointed out by the candidate.
ii. Other scientific production materialized in practical results, namely the development of prototypes or computer applications.
iii. Registered national or international patents, particularly if already in utilization state.
iv. If applicable, the economic enhancement of research results, measured by the ensuing development contracts, transference of technology, patents and spin-off corporations.
v. Participation in research projects.
B. In the assessment of the teaching quality of the candidate all pedagogically relevant and verifiable aspects, brought up by the candidate to the attention of the jury, will be considered and especially the following (classification between 0 and 6):
i. Didactic publications in books or in indexed publications (Thomson Scientific or Scopus) and the development of didactic material through the use of new technologies (e-learning, distance learning), giving special consideration to the quality and originality of the material; all the didactic material must be made available to the jury either in paper or electronic format.
ii. Quality and diversity of the teaching activities of the candidate measured by objective assessment methods, whenever possible.
iii. Development of new course programs, creation and coordination of new study programs and implementations of projects with impact in the teaching/ learning process.
iv. Didactic and scientific value of a report with the program, the contents and the teaching methods (theory and practice) of a course pertaining to the scientific area, or scientific areas, where the disputed position of recruitment is situated, taking into consideration the following points:
a) Precision and novelty of the program;
b) Up-to-date teaching/ learning methodologies;
c) Critical analysis of experienced didactic tryouts;
d) Critical analysis of alternative teaching/ learning strategies the candidate has thought of.
C. In the assessment of the participation in other activities that are relevant to the mission of the University of Porto (classification between 0 and 2) the following items, among others, will be under consideration:
i. Participation in the administration of the institutions the candidate has been affiliated with.
ii. Cooperation in tasks proper to the activity of academic faculty personnel assigned by the institutions where the candidate has held a position.
iii. Participation in university extension services, dissemination of scientific awareness and promotion of economical and social knowledge enhancement.
