The International Doctoral Program in Comparative Studies at the University of Lisbon was selected for funding by the Foundation for Science and Technology, IP (FCT-IP), and will award five doctoral scholarships in the academic year 2015-2016. The Directive Committee of the Program will be responsible for selecting candidates who will be awarded the scholarships financed by FCT-IP, and the awarded candidates will contract their scholarships directly with the FCT. Thus, under the Statute of Scientific Research Fellow, approved by Law nº 40/2004 of 18 August, in its current wording, and Regulation for Scholarships of the Foundation for Science and Technology, the Directive Committee calls for applications.

Application for Doctoral Scholarships

The International Doctoral Program in Comparative Studies at the University of Lisbon was selected for funding by the Foundation for Science and Technology, IP (FCT-IP), and will award five doctoral scholarships in the academic year 2015-2016. The Directive Committee of the Program will be responsible for selecting candidates who will be awarded the scholarships financed by FCT-IP, and the awarded candidates will contract their scholarships directly with the FCT. Thus, under the Statute of Scientific Research Fellow, approved by Law nº 40/2004 of 18 August, in its current wording, and Regulation for Scholarships of the Foundation for Science and Technology, the Directive Committee calls for applications:

Doctoral Scholarships

Five doctoral scholarships (mixed) are awarded. These scholarships are intended for those who meet the conditions specified in clause 1 of Article 30º of Decree-Law Nº 74/2006, of March 24, modified by Decree-law nº 107/2008, June 25th and Decree-law 230/2009, September 14th. The duration of the scholarship is annual, renewable up to a maximum of four years, and it cannot be awarded for periods of less than six consecutive months.

Recipients

The call is open to Portuguese citizens, citizens of European Union countries, citizens of countries outside European Union living in Portugal in the terms laid out by Law nº 23/2007, July 4th, modified by Law nº 29/2012, August 9th, citizens of countries with which Portugal has celebrated reciprocity agreements and citizens of other countries provided that the candidate undergoes a panel interview.

Application deadline

Applications are open from May, 26th until June, 15th, 2015.

Applicants’ requirements:

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

1) Master degree in Humanities or Social Sciences (We shall consider applications from students in the final stages of their MA. In this case, proof of degree must be made before September, 30, 2015; and a transcript of the grades obtained prior to the dissertation must be attached to the application).

2) Other graduate or undergraduate degrees when the candidate’s cv is considered relevant and suited to advanced research in Comparative Studies by the Directive Committee.

3) Working knowledge of three languages (including English).

3) Transcripts of diplomas or degrees

4) Research proposal (Maximum: 5 pages; in English)

5) Sample paper (max. 20 pages; in English, French or Portuguese).

Evaluation

Evaluation of applications is made according to the terms of this announcement, weighing up the assessment factors and producing an ordered list of candidates. The following criteria will be used for grading candidates:

1.  Applicants’ merit (60%):

1.1 Undergraduate final grades: 10%?

1.2 Graduate final grades: 20%?

1.3 Experience and research qualities: 30%?

2. Quality of the research proposal (40%):

2.1 Cover letter, sample paper, and research proposal: 40%

 

Stage 2 (12 students will be admitted for the interview). The following criteria will be used for grading candidates at stage 2:

1.  Applicants’ merit (60%):

1.1 Undergraduate final grades: 10%?

1.2 Graduate final grades: 20%?

1.3 Experience and research qualities: 30%?

2. Quality of the research proposal (40%):

2.1 Cover letter, sample paper, research proposal and interview: 40% -----------------------

Note: The interview will take place on July 10, 2015. Selected candidates will be notified via email about the schedule for the interviews. If unable to attend, candidates may be interviewed by teleconference.

Publication of Results

The evaluation results will be announced within 30 days after the deadline for submission of applications. Candidates will be notified via email. The results will also be publicly available on the Programme’s website at www.phdcomp.net. After disclosure of the results, candidates should be considered automatically notified for presenting any claim in a preliminary hearing within 10 working days, as established in the Administrative Procedure Code. An appeal concerning the final decision may be brought to the Directive Committee within 15 working days after the notification of results.

Financing

The grants awarded under this scholarship application will be financed by funds from the State Budget of the Ministry of Education and Science and, when eligible, from the European Social Fund through the Operational Programs of the programming period 2014-2020, of Portugal 2020, namely, the Human Capital Operational Programme, the North, Center and Alentejo Regional Operational Programmes, in accordance with the provisions of the applicable Specific Regulation. Note

Scholarships will not be awarded to candidates who are in situation of unjustified breach of the obligations of the grantee under any previous grant contract funded directly or indirectly by the FCT, namely when final or interim reports have not been delivered or when funds whose refund is due under applicable law or regulation have not been returned.
