Call for PhD Studentships-Interuniversity PhD Program in Aging and Chronic Diseases (FCT PhD program)
A call is open for 10 PhD studentships (full tuition and stipend) within the FCT PhD programs, for the
Interuniversity (University of Coimbra, Nova University of Lisbon and University of Minho) PhD Program in
Aging and Chronic diseases. These studentships will be supported by the National Budget and, if applicable, by
funds from the Social European Fund, through the POPH program from QREN.
The studentships are full time, and renewed annually up to a maximum of 4 years duration. Expected starting
date is September 2016. The research activities will be developed in the research institutions affiliated with the
Program, following the guidelines of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT), the national
funding agency that supports science, technology and innovation
2. Area of research and scientific supervision
The research activities will be developed within projects in health sciences, on topics related with aging and/or
chronic diseases. The specific research projects and supervisors will be defined during the first year of the
program, taking into consideration the preferences of the selected candidates and the guidelines provided by the
directive board of the PhD Program.
3. Admission requirements
Applicants must hold a Master degree in Sciences, or legal equivalent, completed until May 26th 2016, with a
final average grade in the Bachelor degree of 14 or higher in a 0-20 scale (or equivalent for universities using
different scales) and a final average grade in the Master degree in Sciences (or legal equivalent) of 16 or higher
in a 0-20 scale (or equivalent for universities using different scales), or of 15 higher in a 0-20 scale (or
equivalent for universities using different scales) in the case of an Integrated Master degree.
The evaluations will consider previous participation in research projects, authorship in presentations in
congresses, in publications and in patents, motivation letter and recommendation letters.
4. Evaluation and selection criteria
Evaluation will consider academic qualifications (30%), previous experience in research projects weighted for
the year of Master, or equivalent, completion (30%), scientific productivity (publications and presentations in
congresses) weighted for the year of Master, or equivalent, completion (30%), letters of motivation and of
The top 30 candidates in the evaluation of the application will be invited for an interview. Among the applicants
interviewed, up to 10 will be selected according to the curriculum evaluation (50%) and the interview (50%).
5. Selection Committee
The selection Committee encompasses the members of the Directive Board of the Program: Catarina Oliveira
(President of the Committee and Program Director, University of Coimbra), Henrique Girão (University of
Coimbra), Margarida Correia-Neves (University of Minho), Duarte Barral (University Nova Lisboa).
6. Results notifications
Notification of the results will be provided through the electronic address provided by the applicants.
The studentships (tuition and stipend) follow the guidelines from FCT, I.P.,
(http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores), payment will be made by bank transfer.
The studentships are awarded under the Research Fellow Holder Statute
(https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/estatutobolseiro) in its present form and the Studentship and Fellowship
