1. Job description

Job:
Research Grant

Job/Fellowship Reference: BIM/MaxCut4Fish_01/2017

Main research field: Computer science

Sub research field:

Job summary:

There is a competition for the awarding of 1 Research Grant (ID) under project MaxCut4Fish: Intelligent and modular system of automatic cutting for frozen fish (017664), financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the COMPETE2020 - Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Program and the Lisboa2020 - Regional Operational Program of Lisbon 2014-2020 under the following conditions: SCIENTIFIC AREA: Computer Vision, Mathematical Modeling, Linear Optimization.

Job description:

REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should hold a Master Science in the fields of Computer Sciences, Electronic Engineering or other related fields. The following will constitute advantages in the evaluation of candidates: 1) Knowledge and experience in digital image processing / analysis; 2) Knowledge and experience in mathematical modeling and linear optimization; 3) Previous knowledge and experience programming in languages and tools such as: C++, Python, OpenCV and MATLAB; 4) Fluency in English. BRIEF DESCRIPTION AND WORK PLAN: The project’s main objective is to research and develop an intelligent and modular system of automatic cutting for frozen fish which, by exploiting and combining the inner potential of the computer vision and sensory automation, will allow to define the optimal cuts considering each fish’s morphological and volumetric characteristics and weigh. That will enable the maximization of the fish use, the minimization of production waste, an increase of the quality and standardization of the final fish slices, among other features. Therefore, the MaxCut4Fish system will allow to meet the needs of the fish processing companies (which, due to the increase of fish’s consumption and to the decrease of natural resources, are obliged to maximize the use of its raw materials) and, simultaneously, allow the industrial enterprises focused on the development and production of industrial equipment to exploit and profit from this huge market opportunity and to diversify and amplify its portfolio and – consequently – its markets. The research selected will carry out research activities, in particular, development of computer vision algorithms and mathematical modeling, and methods of supporting "intelligent and modular" systems for automatic cutting of frozen fish. SCIENTIFIC ORIENTATION: Prof. Dr. Miguel A. Guevara Lopez and Prof. Dr. Luis Magalhães APPLICABLE LEGISLATION: The granting of the scholarship is based on the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, approved by Law no. 40/2004 of 18 August, and the Grants Regulations of the Computer Graphics Center. WORKPLACE: CCG’s facilities in University of Minho, Guimarães, Portugal. DURATION AND REGIME OF ACTIVITY: The initial contract duration is for 6 months on an exclusive basis, scheduled to start in February, 2017, possibly renewable until the end of the project, on an exclusive basis, according to FCT's advanced training regulations for human resources and the CCG scholarship regulations. FELLOWSHIP SUBSIDY: The amount of the scholarship will be defined according to the academic qualification of the candidate and according to the table of values of grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. In the Country (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). APPLICATION DOCUMENTS: Candidates must present their applications by means of a letter of admission (application letter) mentioning their motivations, accompanied by a detailed Curriculum Vitae, a copy of the MSc degree certificate and a copy of the Identification (ID) Card. SELECTION METHOD: The evaluation will take into account the merit of the candidate, considering the parameters of the academic formation, curriculum profile and experience in scientific research, namely in the scientific fields of specialization in relation to the area of performance of the project in which the grantee will carry out its activity. The selection/evaluation of the candidate will be divided into two phases. The first involves an evaluation of the curriculum (60% of the total value) to select candidates who move to the next stage; While the second phase will consist of an interview (40% of the total value), with the aim of producing an orderly list of candidates, resulting winner the candidate ranked in first position according to the selection criteria specified above. The jury reserves the right to cancel the call if none of the candidates meets the specified qualifications. APPLICATION DEADLINE AND SUBMISSION: The call is open until the 31th January 2017. Applications should be sent by email to the address: jobs@ccg.pt, indicating the project call reference BIM/MaxCut4Fish_01/2017.
