Job description:

1. The board of GHES - Research Centre of Economic and Social History deliberated the opening of an international selection tender for one vacancy of doctorate to perform duties of scientific research a 3-year research contract in the area of Monetary and Financial History in an undefined work contract regime, pursuant to the Labour Code, in order to integrate the teamwork of a broader project concerning the precious metals flows, agents and entrepreneurial skills that supported international transactions in early modern world. The researcher to be recruited is expected to work on the silver inflows and impacts on Portuguese money supply and exchange rate in a comparative perspective.

2. Applicable Legislation is:
a) Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of 29 August, which approved the doctorate hiring regime destined to stimulate scientific and technological employment for all knowledge areas (RJEC).
b) Labour Code approved Law no. 7/2009 of 12 February, under its current reading.

3. Pursuant to article 13 of RJEC, the tender selection panel shall be formed by Pedro Neves (President of GHES), Leonor Freire Costa (Universidade de Lisboa) and Maria Eugénia Mata (Universidade Nova de Lisboa).

4. Workplace shall be at the facilities of GHES and in archives when archive evidence is required for pursuing the collection of primary data.

5. Monthly remuneration to be paid under a 3-year contract is the remuneration set by article 23 (3) of RJEC, corresponding to level 28 of the Single Salary Table, approved by Order no. 1553-C/2008 of December 31st, i.e. 1,870.88 Euros.

6. Any national, foreign and stateless candidate(s) for this post must meet the following requirements:
a) Hold a doctorate degree in Economic History. In the event the doctorate degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, said degree must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 341/2007 of 12 October, and all formalities established therein must be complied with at the application deadline;
b) Have a relevant post-doctoral experience, for a minimum period of five years, in the scientific area mentioned in article 1;
c) Present a research proposal (containing a maximum of 2000 words) for work suitable to being undertaken during the period of the contract.

7. Pursuant to article 5 of RJEC, selection is to be made based on candidate scientific and curricular career evaluation.

8. The post-doctoral scientific and curricular career evaluation focuses on relevance, quality and up-to-dateness:
a) of scientific production in the last five years, deemed most relevant by the candidate;
b) of research activities developed in the last five years, deemed most impactful by the candidate;
c) of knowledge extension and dissemination activities developed in the last five years, namely under the scope of the promotion of culture and scientific practices, deemed most relevant by the candidate.

9. The five-year period mentioned above can be extended by the panel, if requested by the candidate, whenever the suspension of scientific activities is reasoned by socially protected grounds like paternity leave, long-term serious illness, and other legal situations of unavailability to work.

10. Evaluation criteria are the following:

Candidates who present a CV and research proposal out of scope defined in point 1 will be excluded.

The post-doctoral career evaluation, which has an overall weighting of 70%, includes:
a) The scientific production, which has a weighting of 50% in the overall assessment, includes publication (articles, books, chapters of books and other publications), participation in national and international academic meetings;
b) The research activities, which has a weighting of 15% in the overall assessment, includes participation in research projects and integration in international networks and partnerships;
c) Knowledge extension and dissemination, which has a weighting of 5%, includes publications of research results for a wider, non-academic audience.

An assessment of the quality and relevance of the research proposal referred in point 6, which has a weighting of 30%.

Candidate final classification system shall be given based on a scale of 1 to 5 up to decimals.

11. Evaluation process may include an interview to the top two candidates in the event of the evaluation criteria in point 10 being insufficient for selection. In case of interview, the applicant will be asked to present and discuss the research proposal mentioned in point 6.

12. The panel shall deliberate by means of roll-call vote justified under adopted and disclosed selection criteria, with no abstentions allowed.

13. Minutes of panel meetings shall be executed and shall include a summary of all occurrences of said meeting, as well as of all votes casted by the members and respective reasoning, and shall be provided to candidates whenever required.

14. After selection criteria application, the panel shall prepare a sorted list of approved candidates and respective classification.

15. Panel’s final decision shall be validated by the leader of the institution, who is also in charge of deciding about the hiring.

16. Application formalization:

Applications are formalized upon application letter, addressed to the President of GHES, elaborating on the motivations for applying to the vacancy.

Applications shall include all supported documents encompassed by section 6 for tender admission, namely:
a) Certificate or diploma copies;
b) Detailed Curriculum vitae;
c) Copies of the publications pursuant to sections 8 and 10.1 and 10.2;
d) Research proposal.

Candidates shall submit their application files and supporting documentation, preferably in a digital form, in PDF format, via email to ghes@iseg.ulisboa.pt, in person at Rua Miguel Lupi, N.º 20, Office 202 – 1249-078 Lisboa, during working hours, or by mail to said address. When submitted by mail, applications must be sent by registered mail with acknowledgement of receipt sent until the last day of application deadline, which is hereby set as the period of 30 working days after the publication of this Announcement.

17. All candidates who formalize their applications in an improper way or fail to prove the requirements imposed by this tender are excluded from admission. In case of doubt, the panel is entitled to request any candidate to present further documentation supporting their statements.

18. False statements provided by the candidates shall be punished by law.

19. All applicants will be notified about the final selection decision by e-mail with delivery receipt.

20. Preliminary Hearing and Final Decision Deadline: After notified, all candidates have 10 working days to respond. Panel’s final decisions are pronounced within a period of 90 days, from application deadline.

21. This tender is exclusively destined to fill this specify vacancy and can be terminated at any time until approval of final candidate list, expiring with the respective occupation of said vacancy.

22. 23. The panel has approved this announcement in meeting held on 24/02/2017.

24. Pursuant to Decree-Law no. 29/2001 of 3 February, disabled candidates shall be preferred in a situation of equal classification, and said preference supersedes any legal preferences. Candidates must declare, on their honour, their respective disability degree, type of disability and communication/expression means to be used during selection period on their application form, under the regulations above.
