Aníbal T. de Almeida received his graduation degree in electrical engineering from the Faculty of Engineering - Porto University, in 1972, received his PhD degree in Computer Control from London University, in 1977 and received his aggregation degree in electrical engineering from the University of Coimbra, in 1981. Professor Aníbal T. de Almeida is Full Professor of the Electrical Engineering Department of University of Coimbra and Director of the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR)-Coimbra.He has participated and has been responsible for several projects with industry, namely: Vision based Smart lighting systems (with ARQUILED); Energy Harvesting systems for monitoring and control(ARQUILED); Weaver’s loom and textile machinery automation (with ALMAGRE; Automation of production of automotive plastic (with Plasfil); Automatic cell for quality control of telecom equipment (with Portugal-TELECOM); Automation of wood board industries (with Somit), Agloma and SIAF; Robotic electrostatic painting line (with FIMEL); Climbing robot for tree-like structures-REN. He has been involved with/responsible for several funded projects at both national and international levels in the areas of mobile robotics, intelligent vehicles and intelligent transportation systems (ITS): Project European Union FP7 TIRAMISU; Project European Union, FP6-IST GUARDIANS Group of Unmanned Assistant Robots Deployed In Aggregative Navigation supported by Scent detection,; EU-contract: FP6-IST; and is coordinating several projects: project Demine- Mobile Robot for Humanitarian Demining; project RoboNose. – Olfaction-Based Mobile Robot Navigation; Marie Curie Underwater Autonomous Robotics project AquaFinder; ROBOT2000 – Paiting Robot for Electrostátic application; ESPRIT Exploratory Action 5673 “Computer Aided Multi-Sensor Systems”; ESPRIT Working Group 8474 LEGRO – Legged Mobile Robots. Professor Aníbal T. de Almeida has been part of the Organization of several International Conferences in the area of Robotics: AMC-1998 – International Workshop on Advanced Motion Control, Coimbra, June 2008; ICAR-2003 – International Conference on Automation and Robotics, Coimbra, June 2003; CLAWAR- 2008 - International Conference Climbing and Walking Robots, Coimbra, September, 2008. Presently he is General Chair of the IROS-2012 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent RObots and Systems, Vilamoura-Algarve, Portugal.
