Scientific Interests:
Biology, physiology and biochemistry of extremophiles (thermophiles, hyperthermophiles, halophiles and extremely radiation-resistant organisms). Ecology and population dynamics of Legionella species.
The research in the laboratory ranges from the taxonomy of extremophiles to the molecular biology of osmotic adjustment of hyperthermophilic and thermophilic organisms, to the synthesis of polysaccharides in Mycobacterium species.
Microbial quality control of water, foods and clinical specimens using new methods.

Grants:
Twenty one research grants from Portugal and the European Comission.

Supervision of higher degrees:
Fiftheen MS and eight Ph.D. dissertations

Scientific activities:
Co-author of 137 scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals and books.
Co-inventor of four patents.
